1. Abstract
 This mini thesis focus on the operator machine control
using Siemens PLC. The objective is to develop a fully
automatic control system for paper roller using two
stepper motors, a Siemen’s S7-1200 processor and an
HMI screen.
 A motor can be controlled in different ways. Controlling

motors using PLC is the most common way in industry.

This mini thesis will show a basic example of motor
control using the PLC to show how newer technology can
be used.

2. Introduction
 Overthe course of the past years, an automatic process control has
emerged from intuitive especially in industry. With a rapid increasing
need of industrial process control, an efficient and effective method is
needed.

 Technological revolutions hit the industrial world in 1960s, when the

development of the first programmable logic controller (PLC) is
explored. A basic problem in the design of a PLC based process control
system is presented.

 Therefore, designing a PLC based level control system attracts great

interests in learning and understanding PLC based industrial control.

3. Literature Review
 In general, there are two major division of control theory
viz. classical control theory and modern control theory.
 Most of the control systems before 1950s were analog
types. They had switches, contractors, relays, timers, and
counters and the main purpose of such control circuit was to
turn on and off the machines/processes.
 The multipurpose, smaller sized, and cheap microcomputers
were introduced in the industry at early 1970s and they
rapidly overtook the existing market and are predominant
still today.

4. Aim and Objectives
 to reduce the need for human sensory and mental
requirements

 to study how does PLC controller works

 to demonstrate Operator Machine Control using Siemens

PLC

 to develop a fully automatic control system for paper

roller using two stepper motors and a Siemen’s S7-1200
processor

5. Contribution of Thesis

 This thesis contributes to the area of modern industrial

control systems.

 This thesis introduces and implement today’s most

common Siemen’s S7-1200 processor.

Siemens S7-1200 advantages
1. The miniature controller that offers maximum automation at minimum cost.

2. Extremely simple installation, programming and operation.

3. Large-scale integration, space-saving, powerful.

4. Suitable for small to medium-size automation engineering applications.

5. Can be used both for simple controls and for complex automation tasks.

6. All CPUs can be used in stand-alone mode, in networks and within distributed
structures.

7. Suitable for applications where programmable controllers would not have been
economically viable in the past.

8. With exceptional real-time performance and powerful communication options .

Siemens TIA Portal
 Totally integrated automation (TIA) is a strategy (philosophies/architecture) in
the automation technology, which was developed since 1996 by Siemens
Automation and Drives.
 This strategy defines the interaction of extensive single components, tool (SW)

and the services (spare part service, etc.) to achieve an Automation solution.
 The interaction performs integration across the four automation levels of the

automation pyramid:
 1. Management level
 2. Operator’s level
 3. Controller’s level
 4. Field level
 The consistency of TIA offers a simplification and cost savings to companies

involved in the value chain (OEM, System integration planner and end
customer).

8. Thesis Outcome
 The paper roller is an example of how the motion of
stepper motors can be controlled using Siemens S7
1200 processor through TIA Portal.

 It is obviously a good way of demonstrating how a

complex system can be easily controlled using modern
technologies.

9. Future Plans
This project is not the most advanced and most efficient. There
are many things that can be done in the future. They are:
 Making system smoother for auto manual transfer and while
ramping up initially.
 Designing and Implementing OPC-UA client server architecture
to control the process remotely.
 Controlling motion from remote location using admin-client
configuration.
 Designing prototype for other materials based on torque required
for that specific material.
 Developing the mathematical model of the system and analyzing
its efficiency.

10. Conclusion
 The presented work can be an example of showing how
the current resources can be optimized and modified
gradually to advance the level so that the impact of
drastic change can be reduced.

 This kind of upgrading not only bridges the

technological gap but also helps mitigating socio-
economic problems.
