There are two main types of nurses in the operating room - scrub nurses and circulating nurses. Scrub nurses work in the sterile area of the OR, assisting surgeons during surgery by passing tools, having knowledge of procedures and instruments. Circulating nurses are outside the sterile area, helping to gather tools and equipment, maintain patient documentation, and count instruments before and after surgery. Common surgical instruments include scalpels for cutting, forceps for grasping, scissors for cutting, bone cutters for bone removal, and retractors for separating incisions.
