What does tenses mean?

Tenses refer to the state of the verb. The state, or tense, of the verb
explains the time of the action.

There are four major tenses in English. These include past, present,
future and past future. Each of these tenses can explain an event
1. Simple Present Tense
We use it for facts, habits and regular actions.
Keyword : always, every, never, sometimes, usually, often etc

Ex : My mother goes to the market
every morning
(-) S+is/am/are+not
(-) S+do/does+not+V1 Ex : She is not pretty

(?) Do/does+S+V1+?
Ex : Does my mother go to the

2. Simple Present Continous Tense
We use this tenses for continuing actions,

Keyword : At the moment, just now, right now, now
We make this tense with :
(+) S+tobe+Ving
They are watching tv now

(-) S+tobe+not+Ving
They are not watching tv now

3. Simple Present Perfect Tense
It use for actions that happened at a time that is not spesific
Keyword : already, every just, so far, not yet etc
Form :
(+) S+have/has+V3
Ex : the rain has stopped

(-) S+have/has+not+V3
Ex : The rain has not stopped

(?) Have/has+S+V3?
Ex : Has the rain stopped?
4. Simple Present Perfect Co tinous Tense Present Perfect

Meaning
(+) S+have/has+been+Ving
We use it for
I have been studying english since 6 years
actions that started
in the past and
(-) S+have/has+not+been+Ving
continue to the
I have not been studying english since 6 years
present
(?) Have/has+S+been+Ving?

Simple Past Tense
This tense is used to describe an action that already happened
Keyword : yesterday, 2 minutes ago, in 1996, last Thursday, this morning

Structere:

(+) subject + verb 2


Example:
-I saw my friend in the shop yesterday

(-) S + did + not + verb 1


Ex : I did not see my friend in the shop yesterday

(?) Did + S +Verb 1


Ex : Did i see my friend in the shop yesterday?
Simple Past Continous Tense

This tense is used to describe a past action that was ongoing. This action may have
been interrupted or another action also occurred.

Keyword : when, while, as long as, at this time

Simple Past Perfect Tense

This tense is used to describe an action that was finished before another past
action

Continous Tense
● This tense is used to describe an action that started in the past and continued till another
action or time in the past.
● Keyword: for, since, the whole day, all day
Structure:

Example: She had been working there before she moved to my office

(-) s+had + not + been +verb ing
Ex : She had not been working there before she moved to my office

(?) Had+s+been+verb ing ?


Had she been working there beforw she moved to my office
Simple Future Tense
This tense is used to decribe an action that hasn’t happened yet
Keyword : in a year, next …, tomorrow, next week, five days later

(+) S + Will + Verb 1 (-) S + Will + not +Verb 1 (?) Will + S + Verb 1 + ?

Ex : Mrs Sari will teach us Ex : Mrs Sari won’t teach us Ex : Will mrs Sari teach us?
Simple Future Continous Tense

(+) Subject + will + be + v ing
example i will be studying math

This tense is used to describe on action that


will occur and will continue for a set period
of time in the future

Keyword : by next Monday, in a week

Simple Future Perfect Continous Tense

This tense is used to describe an action that will continu up untill a point in the future
Keyword : for the last couple of hours, all day long

Stucture :
(+) Subject + will + have + been + v ing
example they will have been renovating their office for two month
(-) Subject + will + not + have + been + v ing
example they will not have been renovating their office for two month
(?) Will + subject + have + been + v ing
example will they have been renovating their office for two month?
