Tools of the Mind
★ Teaches children to self-regulate emotions, physical behavior, social interactions, and
control cognitive processes (pay attention)

★ Emphasizes the importance of oral language development as a necessary beginning to


learning to read and write

★ Identifies specific knowledge children need to accumulate over their early years in
order to become successful readers and writers
What makes tools of the mind

★ All activities are designed to give children practice developing self-regulation

★ Kids talk MORE and teachers talk LESS

★ Make believe play is a specific focus in the first trimester

Children have a hard time waiting, sharing materials their turn. They can use strategies like asking for

Children without self-regulation may not be able to to a story, play a game, or sit through a meal. Their
stay seated and listen to a story, sit through dinner or attention may wander, but they can bring it back to
a game. the task at hand.
How can you support self-regulation

★ Set up routines that get children home? in remembering steps in a sequence, and
planning what comes next
★ Encourage children to talk to themselves to remember

Why teach sight words?
★ 85% of the words young readers encounter in text are sight words - 65% of the words
adults read are sight words too
★ Many sight words do not “sound out” so they are stumbling blocks for beginning
readers
★ A solid word foundation allows for better fluency, comprehension and confidence
★ Building a child’s sight word vocabulary will also build their writing vocabulary

Important Dates

► K Orientation September 1st


-Students and parents get to meet and greet with
their teachers

Arrival & Dismissal
► Arrival 8:45
► Walkers/Car riders is at the back entrance of the main lobby
► Please make sure arrival and dismissal information is
updated with your child’s teacher
► Dismissal
► Walkers/car riders 2:40 (siblings may be at a different time)
► Bus/champions 3:05
► Please make sure whomever is picking up your child
has permission to do so and has there photo ID when
picking up ….EVERY day
► Masks must be worn for social distancing
Lunch and Snack

* Review what your child will have for lunch each day.
* Practice opening straws, twisting water bottle caps,
opening fruit cup containers, and so on.
* Keep snacks and lunch separate.
* Don’t forget utensils.
* Lunch may be eaten in the classroom.

* Lunch Codes will be emailed to you for ordering lunches

Extra Snacks and Clothes
Please bring in an extra snack in a labeled zipper
lock baggie. Please do the same with the extra set
of clothes.
These baggies are okay HOWEVER the zipper locked baggies are much easier to close.

● Please practice putting on coats, sweatshirts, zipping,
buttoning, and tying shoes.
Pack a small baggie of extra snacks in the event that your
child forgets one.
