Speed

*Speed is defined as the distance travelled by a

body per unit time
*S.I Unit of speed is m/s.It is denoted by (v)
Mathematically,
Speed= Distance/time
Or
v=s/t
*the speed of vehicle is measured in kilometre/hour(km/h).
These units can be easily converted
*conversion of speed from km/h to m/s
1km/h= 5/18m/s
Ex:- Convert a speed of 108km/h into m/s
*Instantaneous Speed :-
The Speed of a body at a instant of time is
known as instantaneous speed
*speedometer is a device used to measure the Speed at
each instant or moment of time

*Average Speed:-
It is defined as the ratio of total
distance travelled by a body to the
total time taken by the body
Average Speed= total distance travelled / total
time taken
*S.I Unit of average speed is (m/s)
Uniform & Non- Uniform Speed
Uniform Speed:- A body moving in uniform motion has
unifrom speed.since it covers equal distance in equal time
intervals, it's speed does not change in different time
intervals it remains constant or uniform

Non- Uniform Speed:- A body moving in non-uniform

motion has non- Uniform speed.since it covers unequal
distance in equal interval of time,it's speed changes in each
intervals its speed is variable or non- Uniform
Numerical Problems

Q). A machine moves at a rate of 10m/s . convert it's Speed to

km/h
Numerical Problems
Q) A bus travels a distance of 120km with a speed of 40 km/h and
returns with a speed of 30km/h.Calculate it's average speed for the
journey.

Numerical Problems
Q).A car moves with a speed of 30km/h for half an
hour,25km/h for one hour and 40km/h for 2 hours.Find it's
average speed

Velocity
Velocity is defined as the displacement of a body per unit
time.
If 's' is the displacement of a body in time 't', Then
velocity (v) is
Mathematically,
V= displacement/time
Or
v= s/t
Uniform & non- Uniform velocity :- A body is said to have
uniform velocity,if it move at constant speed
* A body is said to have non - uniform velocity,if its Speed
or direction changes with time.
Average velocity
The average velocity of a body is defined as the ratio of
its total displacement to the total time taken by it to
cover this displacement
Average velocity= displacement/ time
Or
Vavg= s/t
*the velocity of a body at an instant or moment is termed as
instantaneous velocity
If the velocity of a body changes uniformly with time from an initial
velocity 'u' to a final velocity'v' then,
Average velocity= intial velocity + final velocity/2
Or Vavg= u + v/2
