Grade 11

Topic: ELECTRIC CURRENT.

CONDUCTORS AND INSULATORS
Study pages 109-112

►Specific objectives
1.Define conductors, non-
conductors;
2.Distinguish between metallic and
electrolytic conduction;
electrolytes
3.Classify electrolytes as weak or
strong (based on conductivity)
Initial questions

►Do the metals conduct electricity in the

same way or with the same intensity?
►There is any other way to conduct
electricity apart of metals?
Why metal conduct electricity?

►Metals are good conductors because

they have unfilled space in the
valence energy band.
What is electrical conduction?

►Electrical conduction is the

movement of electrically charged
particles through a transmission
medium.
What is electricity?

►Electricity can be identified with

the motion of electrons through a
conductor.
What other substances conduct
electricity?
►Metals
►Graphite
►Molten ionic compounds like salts
►Solutions of ionic and molecular
compounds like salt solution and
acids solutions.
Do these substances conduct
electricity like metals?

►Metals are the best conductors of an

electric current.
►So the different substances do not
conduct electricity like metals.
►When salts are solid crystals they
don’t conduct electric current, only
solutions or molten salts.
Which particles conduct electricity
in metals?
►In metals, electrons are the responsible
of the carry the electric current and is
known as metallic conduction.
1. Classify the following substances
as metals or non-metals :

a)Na, sodium - metal

b)Fe, iron - metal
c) P4, phosphorus - non-metal
d)F2, fluorine - non-metal
e)Ca, calcium - metal
f) Zn, zinc - metal
g)H2, hydrogen - non-metal
Conductors and insulators
►  Conductor is an object or type of
material that allows the flow of an
electrical current in one or more
directions.
Examples: metals, solutions of salts.
►Insulators are non-conducting
materials with few mobile charges
that support only insignificant
electric currents.
Examples: solid salts, wood, plastics.
2. Classify the following substances
as conductors or insulators:

A. Glass - insulator
B. Rubber - insulator
C. Molten sodium chloride - conductor
D. Paper - insulator
E. Styrofoam - insulator
F. Human body - conductor
G.Graphite - conductor
H. Copper - conductor
Homework
1. Make your own list of insulators and
conductors using three substances related
with your everyday life. (6marks)
2. “Based on this property of metal: conduct
electricity, they have several uses in our
everyday life”
Explain using three reasons, whether you are
or not agree with this statement.(3 marks)
3. Answer ITQ1 and 2
Graded

►Answer the 2 activities and the homework

(total 24 marks)
►Create a word doc or google doc with the
answers.
►Go to the classwork section , look for
Electricity and turn in.
