As presented in the video, Assertive discipline is an obedience-
based discipline approach to classroom management
developed by Lee and Marlene Canter. Assertive discipline is a
systematic structured approach to assisting teacher in running
an organized, teacher-in-charge classroom. This approach
focuses equal on punishment and reward, and helps teacher
instill rules and discipline. Assertive discipline plan is a must in
any teacher classroom.

Teacher Response Style:
Hostile: Students feel they are being unjustly controlled
Characteristics: Sarcastic, uses commands, Abrasive
Non-Assertive: Students learn not to take this teacher serious
and walk all over them.
Characteristics: passive, inconsistent, timid
Assertive: Students listen to rules, feel valued, and
understand they are there to learn
Characteristics: Strong-willed, Stern, Caring.
Main Focus
•Most important technique to this approach is to catch students being good.
• Students who behave appropriately will receive recognition and support and constantly
receive praise for good behavior..
•According to Canter, students will obey the rules because they get something in return.
•Consequences of breaking the rules must be clear, have a set punishment, and student
must understand what will happen if that rule is broken.
•Assertive discipline is widely used discipline plan in schools.
•Teachers say using assertive discipline is easy to use and extremely effective
Implementation
• There is no acceptable reason for misbehavior.

• Choose 4-5 Rules to implement in your classroom.

• Determine the negative consequences for those who do not comply. (


Ex: Detention, Call home)

• Determine the positive consequences for those who behavior.


( homework pass, Snacks)

• List the rules on the board along with the positive and negative
consequences.

• Have students write rules down, have them take those rules home
and have parents sign the sheet. Send additionally sheet with them
explaining the program you have implemented and request their
help.

• Implement the program immediately!!! First day, lay the law down!

Lee Cantors’ assertive discipline is a must for Classroom
Management. Classroom management is important to help
teacher control the classroom, help students learn more
effectively, and give students a sense of worth for
education. The rules and consequences need to be set on
day one and students must know that not only did they
know the expectation of the classroom, but so do the
parents. Lee Cantors approach is used widely throughout
the nation.

Conclusion:
Assertive discipline is also useful for teachers, it helps them
set boundaries, teaches them to consistently follow-
through, and help identify students who behave well
