The Sound and the Ear

Angelo Carlo D. Pilapil

General Principles of Sound
Sound waves
Are periodic compressions of air,
water, or other media.

Amplitude
Is the intensity, which is the
compression of molecules in the sound
waves.
General Principles of Sound
Loudness
is a sensation related to amplitude
but not identical to it. Ex. People
talking fast.
Decibels
General Principles of Sound
Frequency
Is the number of compressions per
second, measured in herts (Hz, cycles
per second).

PITCH
is the related
aspect of
perception.

General Structure of the Ear

Outer ear
Pinna- helps us locate the position of
the sound
External Auditory Canal- allows the
sound waves to pass through the ears.

Middle ear
Tympanic membrane (eardrum)-
transmits vibrations to three tiny bones.
Three small bones
(English) (Latin)
Hammer Malleus
Anvil Incus
Stirrup Stapes
General Structure of the Ear
Inner ear
Oval Window- opening of the cochlea
that allows sound waves to reach the
Organ of corti.
Organ of corti (hair cells)- located inside
the cochlea, sensory receptor of the ear.
Sound interpretation
Fast music= more neurons=
Rock n’roll

Slow music= few neurons

=Relax
Does our sensation affects our
interpretation?
Hearing loss
Conductive deafness i.e.
problem in the middle ear

Nerve deafness
Vestibular Organ
The sensory
structures in the
inner ear that
provide the
brain with
information
about
orientation and
movement.

Ex. Try move
your head while
reading!!

Ex. Moving
Vehicle to vomit
