Invention of

Telescope
CPI TEA-II
What is a
Telescope?
A telescope is an optical instrument using
lenses, curved mirrors, or a combination of
both to observe distant objects, or various
devices used to observe distant objects by their
emission, absorption, or reflection of
electromagnetic radiation.
How were telescopes
invented?

Hans Lippershey claimed that a

device could magnify objects three
times. He got the idea for his
design after observing two children
in his shop holding up two lenses
that made a distant weathervane
appear close.
Why were telescopes
invented?

Early telescopes were primarily

used for making Earth-bound
observations, such as surveying and
military tactics. Galileo Galilei was
part of a small group of
astronomers who turned telescopes
towards the heavens.

Modern
Telescopes
• Reflecting Telescopes are used
nowadays to observe distant
astronomical objects.
• Radio Telescopes are used to study
radio light emitted from stars,
galaxies, black holes, etc.
Conclusion

Two children playing with lenses

accounted for the huge discovery of the
telescope. From observing military
tactics, we now observe distant objects
in space.
