Chi- Square Test

Balang, Sonaya U.
Melañez, Jay- Anne F.
Orcana, Chyrish Camille M.
The chi- square test is an important tests amongst the
several tests of significance develop by statistician.
It was developed by Karl Pearson in 1900.
CHI-SQUARE TEST is a non-parametric test not
based on any assumption or distribution of any
variable.
This statistical tests follows a specific distribution
known as chi square distribution.
In general the test we use to measure the differences
between what is observed and what is expected
according to an assumed hypothesis is called the chi-
square test.
The Relationship Between Gender
and Preferred Movie Genre of the
Random Students of La
Concepcion College
Objectives
To determine if there is a relationship
between gender and preferred movie
genre of the random students of La
Concepcion College.
Hypothesis
Ho: There is NO relationship between gender
and preferred movie genre of the random
students of La Concepcion College.

Ha: There is a relationship between gender

and preferred movie genre of the random
students of La Concepcion College.

CHI- SQUARE, x²

x² = ∑(O-E)²
E
Where:
O = observed value/ collected data
E = expected value
∑ = summation or total
EXPECTED VALUE, E
E = RT × CT
GT

Where:
RT = row total
CT= column total
GT= grand total
Observed Value Table
Movie Genre Animatio Drama Horror Sci- Fi RomCom Total
n
Male 7 1 5 17 9 39
Female 4 9 12 7 12 44
Total 11 10 17 24 21 83

E1 = 39(11)= 5.17 E6 = 44(11)= 5.83

83 83
E2 = 39(10)= 4.69 E7 = 44(10)= 5.30
83 83
E3 = 39(17)= 7.98 E8 = 44(17)= 9.01
83 83
E4 = 39(24)= 11.28 E9 = 44(24)= 12.72
83 83
E5 = 39(21)= 9.87 E10 = 44(21)= 11.13
83 83
X1² = (7-5.17)²= 0.65 X6² = (4-5.83)²= 0.57
5.17 5.83
X2² = (1-4.69)²= 2.90 X7² = (9-5.30)²= 2.58
4.69 5.30
X3² = (5- 7.98)²= 1.11 X8² = (12-9.01)²= 0.99
7.98 9.01
X4² = (17- 11.28)²= 2.90 X9² = (7-12.72)²= 2.57
11.28 12.72
X5² = (9-9.87)²= 0.07 X10² = (12-11.13)²= 0.07
9.87 11.13

For x²=
0.65+2.90+1.11+2.90+0.07+0.57+2.58+0.99+2.57+0.07
= 14.41
df = (r-1) (c-1)
df = (2-1) (5-1) a = 0.05
x² critical = 9.49
df = (1) (4)
df = 4

Decision:
Since x² computed (14.41) is greater than x² critical
(9.49), reject null hypothesis (Ho).
Conclusion:
Since null hypothesis is rejected, we can conclude that
there is a relationship between gender and preferred
movie genre of the random students of La Concepcion
College.
