The top ten

global issues
and
how they can be
adress
Climate 01
change
Cli mate change

Climate change is the long-term

alteration of temperature and typical
weather patterns in a place. Climate
change may cause weather patterns to
be less predictable.

The global temperatures are rising, and are estimated to increase from 2.6 degrees
Celsius to 4.8 degrees Celsius by 2100. This would cause more severe weather,
crises with food and resources and the spread of diseases.
How can climate change be address?
Speak up!

By voicing your concerns—via social

media or, better yet, directly to your
elected officials—you send a message
that you care about the warming world.

Rethink planes, trains, and

automobiles.
Choosing to live in walk able smart-
growth cities and towns with quality public
transportation leads to less driving, less
money spent on fuel, and less pollution in
the air.
How can climate change be address?
Reduce water waste.

Saving water reduces carbon pollution,

too. That's because it takes a lot of energy
to pump, heat, and treat your water.

 The reduction of greenhouse emissions and the

spreading of education on the importance of
going green can help make a big difference.
 Lobbying governments and discussing policies
to reduce carbon emissions and encouraging
reforestation is an effective way of making
progress with climate change.
pollution 02
Pollution

Pollution is one of the most difficult global issues

to combat and is the introduction
of harmful materials into the environment. These
harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollutants
can be natural, such as volcanic ash. They can also
be created by human activity, such as trash
or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants damage
the quality of air, water, and land.
How can pollution be address?
 Reducing the use of water and chemical
inputs;
 Adoption of less environmentally harmful
pesticides or cultivation of crop strains
with natural resistance to pests; and
 Implementing water and energy
conservation practices
 Reusing materials such as drums and
pallets rather than disposing of them as
waste
 Avoid burning leaves, trash, and other
materials.
 Avoid using gas-powered lawn and
garden equipment.
violence 03
violence

Violence can be found in the social,

cultural and economic aspects of the
world. Violence is "the intentional use
of physical force or power, threatened
or actual, against oneself, another
person, or against a group or
community, that either results in or has
a high likelihood of resulting in injury,
death, psychological harm,
maldevelopment, or deprivation."
How can violence be address?
 Make sure your streets and homes are well-lighted.
 Build a partnership with police, focus on solving problems instead of
reacting to crises. Make it possible for neighbors to report
suspicious activity or crimes without fear of retaliation.
 Develop and share a phone list of local organizations that can
provide counseling, job training, guidance, and other services that
can help neighbors.
 Never go anywhere with someone you and your parents don't know
and trust.
 Settle arguments with words, not fists or weapons. Don't stand
around and form an audience.
 Learn safe routes for walking in the neighborhood, and know good
places to seek help. Trust your feelings, and if there's a sense of
danger, get away fast.

Security and Well
Being
Well-being is more about the condition
of soul, while security is physical
condition. -  Kyrgyzstan

Well-being is the experience of health

and happiness. It includes mental and
physical health, physical and emotional
safety, and a feeling of belonging,
sense of purpose, achievement and
success.
How can security and well being be address?
Understand your current physical risks and plan accordingly.

• When parents send their children to school in the morning, they have a
minimum expectation that their children will return in as good or better
condition.

Make the practices, policies, and procedures part of the

school culture.

• The systems schools put in place to keep students and staff safe are
only as good as their implementation. Good policies, practices, and
procedures should reflect the cultural expectation of the school, and
vice versa.
How can security and well being be address?
Have a vision for the psychological well-being of your
students.

• Giving students the tools they need to handle the tensions and tests in their
lives is an important part of educating the whole student. Some schools
address these skills and coping mechanisms by inculcating developmentally
appropriate strategies into their curriculum through counselors, school
chaplains, or other trained staff.

Bring parents into the equation.

• To have the desired impact on student well-being, parents must be a
part of the school’s overall approach to safety and wellness. From a
risk standpoint, parents need to understand the school’s culture of
risk so that they are not surprised by the risk later.
Lack
of 05
education
Lack of education

A lack of education can be defined as a

state where people have a below-
average level of common knowledge
about basic things that they would
urgently need in their daily life.

More than 72 million children

throughout the globe that are of the age
to be in primary education are not
enrolled in school. This can be
attributed to inequality and
marginalization as well as poverty.
How can lack of education be address?
Better educational infrastructure.

• Governments and municipalities should try to provide better educational
infrastructure so that it is easier for the local population to attend school.

Financial support for poor families.

• It is also crucial to support poor families with financial subsidies so

that their kids are able to attend school. This is quite important to
fight a lack of education since poverty is a main cause why children
are not able to go to school.
How can lack of education be address?
Improve quality of teachers.

• In order to improve the overall education levels, we also have to make sure
that the quality of the teachers is sufficient. If the education of teachers is
quite low, chances are that also the education levels of school kids will suffer
since these teachers will not be able to teach sufficiently advanced things.

Improve access to education for girls and women.

• In countries and regions where girls and women are still

discriminated against due to their gender, it is crucial to raise the
awareness that girls are equally important compared to boys when it
comes to the supply with proper education.
unemployment 06
unemployment

Unemployment occurs when a person

who is actively searching for
employment is unable to find work.
Without the necessary education and
skills for employment, many people,
particularly 15- to 24-year olds, struggle
to find jobs and create a proper living
for themselves and their families. This
leads to a lack of necessary resources,
such as enough food, clothing,
transportation and proper living
conditions.
How can unemployment be address?
• Enhancing the educational standards
• Control of population growth in the nation
• Launch of new empowerment programs
• Encouraging self-employment/ entrepreneurship
• Ensuring access to basic education
• Reducing the age of retirement
• Avoid laziness.
• Being creative, positive and competitive
• Being positive to stop unemployment.
Government
Corruption 07
Government
Corruption
Corruption is a major cause of
poverty considering how it affects
the poor the most, eroding political
and economic development,
democracy and more.
Corruption can be detrimental to the
safety and well being of citizens
living within the corrupted vicinity,
and can cause an increase in
violence and physical threats
without as much regulation in the
government.
How can government corruption be address?

Transparency International offers these ideas in its anti-corruption kit:

• Organize a committee to count and keep track of public supplies, such

as school textbooks.
• Coordinate a sporting event that the community can participate in to
raise awareness of corruption.
• Create a petition and take it to the decision-makers.
Malnourishmen
t 08
and
Malnourishment and Hunge
The term "malnutrition" tends to
conjure up images of the about 800
million people who go hungry
every day – the 156 million
children under the age of 5 years
whose growth is stunted because
they are chronically
undernourished, and the 50 million
children who are affected by life-
threatening acute malnutrition.
Currently there are 795 million
people who do not have enough to
eat.
How can malnutrition and hunger be address?

Improving agriculture to boost incomes.

  connected to economic opportunities through

• To ensure farmers are
agriculture, we work with our partners — from the private sector to
universities and civil society organizations — to help smallholders get the
support, know-how, and access they need to be successful.

Teaching shared responsibility for health and nutrition.

• Educating people on proper nutrition, sanitation and hygiene so they

stay healthy is crucial to addressing food insecurity. Health and
nutrition efforts take root when people adopt the right behaviors, such
as washing their hands before preparing food.
How can malnutrition and hunger be address?
Ensuring that mothers are well nourished is another
important action to take.

  likely to have malnourished

• Malnourished mothers are more
babies. An underweight mother risks having a baby with low birth
weight.

School Feeding Program (SFP)

• A targeted safety net program designed to provide educational and

health benefits to vulnerable children.
Substance
Abuse 09
Substance Abuse

The United Nations reports that, by the

beginning of the 21st century, an
estimated 185 million people over the
age of 15 were consuming drugs
globally. The drugs most commonly
used are marijuana, cocaine, alcohol,
amphetamine stimulants, opiates and
volatile solvents. Different classes of
people, both poor and rich, partake in
substance abuse, and it is a persistent
issue throughout the world. Petitions
and projects are in progress to end the
global issue of substance abuse.
How can substance abuse be address?
Screening.

• Screening and brief assessment tools administered during annual routine
medical checkups can detect drug use before it becomes a serious
problem. The purpose of screening is to look for evidence of any use of
alcohol, tobacco, or illicit drugs or abuse of prescription drugs and assess
how severe the problem is.
Brief
Intervention.

• Adolescents who report using drugs can be given a brief intervention

to reduce their drug use and other risky behaviors. Specifically, they
should be advised how continued drug use may harm their brains,
general health, and other areas of their life, including family
relationships and education.
How can substance abuse be address?
Referral.

• Adolescents with substance use disorders or those that appear to be

developing a substance use disorder may need a referral to substance
abuse treatment for more extensive assessment and care.

Follow-up.

•  For patients in treatment, medical professionals can offer ongoing

support of treatment participation and abstinence from drugs during
follow-up visits.
Terrorism 10
Terrorism

Terrorism is an issue throughout the

world that causes fear and insecurity,
violence and death. Across the globe,
terrorists attack innocent people, often
without warning. This makes civilians
feel defenseless in their everyday lives.
How can terrorism be address?
Making national security a higher priority is key in combating
terrorism, as well as promoting justice in wrongdoings to illustrate
the enforcement of the law and the serious punishments for terror
crimes.

UNODC provides assistance through:

• Strengthening legislative and policy frameworks ;

• Enhancing knowledge and skills to investigate and prosecute
cases ;
• Enhancing mechanisms for regional and international
cooperation.
