Design problem 2

A 4 pole 25Hp, 500V,600 rpm,series motor has an efficiency of 82%. The

pole arc to pole pitch ratio is 0.67. Bav = 0.55 wb/m2, and ac= 17000
amp cond/m. obtain the main dimension of the core and design
suitable winding.
Find D and L
• Co = π2 Bav ac x 10-3.
= π2 x 0.55x17000 x 10-3.= 92.28
Pa= P =25hp= 25 x0.746 = 18.65KW
Pa= CoD2Ln n= 600/60 =10
D2L = (Pa/Co n) = (18.65/92.28 x 10) = 0.0202 , D2L=0.0202 ----(1)
Ψ = b/τ = 0.67, assume square pole face b=L
L/ τ = 0.67, L= 0.67 τ
L= 0.67 x (πD/p) = 0.67x x (πD/4) = 0.5262D, L=0.5262D
Substitute this value of L in (1) get D
D=0.337m. L=0.177m
Pi = P/η = 18.65kw/0.82 = 22.74kw
I = 22.74kw/500 v = 45.48A
Ia =I for a series motor. Current is very less so prefer wave winding.
• Bav= (pφ/πDL)
• From this equation find φ.
• Φ = (Bav x πDL/p)= ( 0.55x πx0.337x0.177/4)= 0.026 wb.
E = V = 500 v
Find the number of conductors
• E = (φZN/60)x( p/a)

• n= N/60= 600/60 = 10

• Z= (E.a/ φnp) = ( 500x 2/0.026x10x4) = 962

Z= 962
Number of slots.
wave winding
1. Slots range = πD/25mm to πD/35mm
=( πx0.337/25mm)to (πx0.337/35mm)
= 42 to 30
2. Minimum number of slots per pole is 9 and maximum 16
Sa=number of armature slots then
Sa/p should be minimum 9
Ie Sa/4 =9 then Sa = 9x4 =36
So the range starts from 36
Sa = 36 to 42
For wave winding number slots should not be
a multiple of pole pair
• Pole pair = p/2 = 4/2 =2

• From 36 to 42 select the slots which are not a multiple of pole pair.
ie, should not be a multiple of 2
Selected slots are
37, 39, 41
for wave winding slots/pole arc should be an integer + (1/2)

• Slots /pole arc = ψ(Sa/p)

Check for each selected slots 37, 39, 41
1. 37, ψ(Sa/p) = 0.67(37/4) = 6.19
2. 39, ψ(Sa/p) = 0.67(39/4) = 6.53
3. 41, ψ(Sa/p) = 0.67(41/4) = 6.86
from this integer+1/2 , 39
Minimum number of coil should be EP/15 = 500 x4 /15 =133

• Sa= 39
• Zs= Z/Sa= 962/39= 24
• Assume coil side/ slot u
• U= 2, C= uxSa/2= 2x39/2=39
• U=4 , C= uxSa/2=4x39/2 =78
• U=6, C= uxSa/2= 6x39/2 =117
• U=8, C= uxSa/2= 8x39/2 =156
• U= 10, C= uxSa/2= 10x39/2 =195
• U=12, C= 12x39/2 = 234
• U=24 , C= 24x39/2 = 468
U should be a divisor of conductors /slot
• Sa= 39
U= 8, C= 156
Commutator pitch =𝞫c = πDc/C
Commutator diameter=( 0.6 to 0.8)D
Dc = Commutator diameter =0.7 of armature diameter, given
number of coils = number of commutator segments
C= 156
𝞫c = πDc/C = πx 0.7 x0.337/156 = 4.7mm
So acceptable pitch is with C= 156 given by Sa=39
Final z=39x24 =936
