Safety Precautions
• Workshop generally involves large number of
machines and number of moving parts. This may
cause accidents and injuries if proper measures
are not taken for safe guard against them.
• Personnel Safety
• Machine Safety
• Workshop safety
• Safety precaution while working on lathe.
Personnel Safety
• Wear Tight Dress
• Avoid Long Hair
• Always wear sheet tipped shoes
• Use goggles when grinding
• Always be a alert to anticipate any impending
danger
Machine Safety
• Never attempt to operate a machine without
knowing how to operate it.
• Never pass through a running shaft, rod or
open belts.
• Never stand before planner or shaper
• Do not attempt to stop a machine by hand
• Do not wear rings, Watches etc., while
operating a machine.
Workshop Safety
• Never joke or play near the machine.
• Don’t attempt to adjust or remove belt from a
moving shaft.
• Avoid using unsafe tool and instruments.
Safety Precaution while working on Lathe

• We should apply oil moving parts before and after the

machine is used.
• While Mounting or dismounting the chuck we should
keep a wooden plank on the bed to avoid damage.
• Do not leave the chuck key on the chuck
• Do not try to take measurement when machine is
running.
• Do not shift the gear while the machine is running.
• Do not remove the chips by bear hands.
• Use always proper guards.
Lathe
• A lathe is a machining tool that is used
primarily for shaping metal or wood. It works
by rotating the work piece around a stationary
cutting tool. The main use is to remove
unwanted parts of the material and we get
finished and desirable shape.
Main Parts of the Lathe
Lathe Accessories
• Four Jaw Chuck
• Three Jaw Chuck
• Face Plate
• Steady Rest
• Follower Rest
• Four Jaw Chuck: It is required to hold uneven outer
surface jobs.
• Three Jaw Chuck: It is required to hold turned surface jobs
quickly in correct center of the lathe. It is also known as a
self – centering chuck.
• Face Plate: It is used to hold large diameters of jobs. The
clamping is done by bolts and nuts.
• Steady Rest: It can be fixed on the lathe bed at any
desired place. It is used to support lengthy and heavy
jobs.
• Follower Rest: It can be attached to the cross slide to
stand on the opposite side of the cutting tool. It is used to
turn lengthy thin jobs.
