INTERNET
• Internet is a global system of
interconnected computer networks.
WORLD WIDE WEB
• World Wide Web is a global collection of
documents and other resources, linked by
hyperlinks and URLs.

Web resources are accessed using HTTP or HTTPS, which are

application-level Internet protocols that use the Internet's
transport protocols.
The Internet is the most dynamic and
largest world system of global
communications.
They are united by standard protocols
of information exchange like TCP/IP
(Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol) that they
use as the basis protocols. Thus, the
words “switching to the network”, or
“IP-connectivity” mean, in fact,
switching to one of the
telecommunication networks that
supports the TCP/IP protocols and
belongs to the Internet Society
3
Internet is a global network which when
it is intertwined with other networks
produces what is known as the internet.
The internet is the connectivity which
Boettcher and makes it possible to provide the software
tools and materials through the World
Conrad (1999)  Wide Web (WWW) as it supports
administrative and learning tasks.
Therefore the interlinked documents
which can be sourced via the internet is
identified as the World Wide Web.
Three strands of internet usage relevant to schools:

- It can be used - It can be used - It can be used

to communicate as a source of to publish or
with others/ information/ share
- Tools for - Tools for information/
communications Inquiry - Tools for
construction

5
Communication can either be asynchronous and
synchronous:
Asynchronous – a type of communication where the person
communicates anywhere and anytime.
Ex. E-mail, discussion boards/forums, Blogs, wikis, mailing lists

Synchronous – a type of communication where the people communicate

in real time.
Ex. Chat, instant messaging, test message, video conferencing

information.

20
2 General techniques in locating information:

1. Browsing 2. Searching
BROWSER

- Is a based on a hierarchical
directory of headings and
subheadings.
-To locate information, select
these headings until you get to a
listing of links appropriate to
your interests.
SEARCHING

-Involves the used of online

data base.
-A user submits a query and
then examines websites that
match the terms provided in
the query.
1. Search engine

The different
2. Index search
search services

3. Meta-index
INDEX SEARCH ENGINES

1. An index search engines relies on a

computer-generated index of the content
of website.
2. when someone performs a query, the
search engine does not in real time work
trying to find pages that are relevant. It
has an index that it refers to in order to
display a list of URLs that are related to the
search query terms used.
Meta-index or metacrawler

1. A meta-index or meta
crawler accesses and returns
the results from several
search engines.
TOOLS FOR
CONSTRUCTION

- It refers to the internet as a vehicle

for presenting products created by
students at the same time a way to
create lessons and activities for the
students.
WEBQUEST

- Webquest are web-based activities

designed to help teacher integrate the
internet into the curriculum
-It follows steps with appropriate “live
links” that are integral parts of the
webquest
-Developed by Bernie Dodge at San
Diego State University in February
1995.
CREATING WEBQUEST

-Webquest can be created in word, PPT, and even

excel
Basic parts of webquest:
1. Introduction- it provides the background of the webquest.
2. Task – it indicates what the students are required to do.
3. Process – it gives a details of instructions on what the
students are going to do
4. Evaluation – It present the rubrics on how the students will be
graded
5. Conclusion – It summarize the entire lessons. It gives room for
reflection and thoughts about the topic
Web page creation

-Great way to communication

with your students
-Keep the students informed of
any updates
-Keeps parent in the loop
Components of the website:

1. Course description: includes the learning

objectives, learning goals, class schedule and
class calendar.
2. Class rules and regulation
3. Announcements/events

INTERNET / WWW
AS A LEARNING TOOL

An importance of the internet as a learning

tool is significant. The development of
Internet technologies has raised the
education level in all countries and it has
changed the way students are being taught
at schools.

33
There are many benefits of the internet in the field of
education. Some of these are:

1. Student – Teacher and Peer Interaction

The internet has allowed students to be in constant
touch with their teachers or with other fellow
classmates with the help of social media, messaging
apps and chat forums. Parents can interact as well
as communicate with teachers and school
authorities about their kid’s performance in the
school. Interaction with the like minded people on
forums can help students to explore new ideas and
enrich their knowledge.
34
2. Effective Teaching and Learning Tool

The Internet has become a major tool for

effective teaching as well as a learning tool.
Teachers can use it as a teaching tool by posting
their teaching materials (notes and videos) on
school website or forum . The learning process
becomes interesting and diverse with the use of
tutorial videos and notes. Teachers can teach
with the use of animation, powerpoint slides,
and images to capture the students’ attention.
35
3. Easy Access to Quality Education

Students can easily access quality education

materials like tutorial videos on YouTube for
free or pay fees online for more quality study
materials. Teachers can also make use of the
internet by proving the students with extra
study material and resources such as interactive
lessons, educational quiz as well as tutorials.
Teachers can record their lectures and provide
it to the students for revisions which is better
than reading from notes. 36
4. Interaction with Digital Media

Regular use of digital media is one of the

most basic parts of our lives. Digital bulletin
boards save paper, allow displaying of
videos and audios to attract the attention of
students. Nowadays, there are many paid
sites which provide education resources
which are rich in quality and easily
understandable to masses.
37
5. Keeping you updated with Latest
Information
Information is the biggest advantage
which the internet is offering. There is
a huge amount of information
available for every subject. It keeps us
up to date with the latest information
regarding the subjects in which we are
interested.
38
6. Learning with Multimedia
It helps the students with the learning
process as it helps to simplify the
knowledge. Also, it helps to visualize
what is being taught by the teachers in
school. If you want to prepare for final
exams, you can access Video Tutorials
and other resources online through the
Internet.

WORLD WIDE WEB

WWW as a learning tool :

An educational Web site offers exciting, challenging
avenues for formal and informal teaching and
learning. On the Web, you can learn how airplanes fly
or how to cook a meal. For a more structured learning
experience, companies provide online training to
employees; and colleges offer online classes and
degrees. Instructors often use the Web to enhance
classroom teaching by publishing course materials,
grades, and other pertinent class information.
