ROTATION OF AXIS

+ Bxy + + Dx + Ey + F = 0

To eliminate this xy-term, you can use a procedure called rotation of axes. The
objective is to rotate the x- and y-axes until they are parallel to the axes of the
conic. Angle of rotation should be” 0<θ<90”.
Graph

r  𝑦′

 𝑥′

x
RELATION BETWEEN OLD AND NEW AXIS


 Triangle OP

 cos θ = x/r from this x=rcos θ

 similarly

 sin θ = y/r so y=rsin θ

RELATION BETWEEN OLD AND NEW AXIS

 Triangle OPM

  Cos(α +θ)=x/r so x=rcos(α +θ)

 Similarly

 Sin(α +αsiθ)=y/r y=rsin(α +θ)

 x =r{cos αcos θ-sin n θ}

 x=rcos αcos θ+rsin αsin θ

RELATION BETWEEN OLD AND NEW AXIS

 putting the value rcos α and rsin α

 x= xcos α- ysin α

 y=r{sin αcos θ+cos αsin  θ}

 y=rsin αcos θ+rcos αsin  θ

 putting the value rcos α and rsin α

 y= xsin α+ ycos α
Rotation continue

 After the rotation, the equation of the conic in the new xy-plane will have the
form

 A(x) 2 + C(y) 2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0. Because this equation has no xy-term,

you can obtain a standard form by completing the square.
Example

The x and y axes are rotated through an angle of Solution: since cos45=sin45=
45 radian about the origin . find equation of x= xcos α- ysin α
