- Transport and store materials
- Install equipment
- Repair pump equipment
- Maintain drilling and extraction tools
Requirements
- Becoming a roustabout is typically the entry point for workers in the
gas and oil industry. There are no formal education requirements for
roustabouts, although most have at least a high school diploma or GED.
- As this field grows, many community colleges and vocational schools
have started to introduce programs that provide accelerated roustabout
training for workers seeking entry into the oil and gas field.
Salary
- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), roustabouts
earned a median annual salary of $36,960 (MYR154k) as of May
2017. The highest-paid roustabouts earned more than $59,050
(MYR247k) per year, while the lowest-paid ten percent of workers in
this role earned less than $26,580 (MYR 111k) annually.
Roughneck
- Roughnecks work on the floor of the oil rig as well as in the mudroom
with some of the machinery and other equipment.

within as little as six months of a job well done, they can become a
roughneck.
Salary
- A roughneck should expect to earn approximately $60,000
(MYR250k) a year starting salary. This salary is just an average as
some may make less and certainly many make more. The more
experience you have, the more you can earn.
Derrickman
- The Derrickhand or Derrickman is the person who sits atop the
derrick (about 27 metres above the rig floor) on a drilling rig.
Though the exact duties vary from rig to rig, they almost always
report directly to the driller. Their job is to guide the stands of the
drill pipe into the fingers at the top of the derrick.
- They are also known as Drilling Fluid Operators (DFO). Typically
reports to a supervisor or manager.
Responsibilities
- Primarily responsible for handling tubulars in the derrick and maintaining the
mud (drilling fluid) system

and £35,000 (MYR163k) a year, and experienced drillers can earn in
the region of £39,000 (MYR182k) to £50,000 (MYR233k) a year. (In
addition, employers provide accommodation and food, as well as
warm and waterproof clothing).
Motorman
- the primary responsibilities of the oil rig motorhand (or motorman) are
to keep the engines that power the drilling equipment and some of the
other rig equipment working smoothly. For example, engines are used
to lift drilling pipe, turn the rotary table that turns the drill bit, and for
mixing and circulating drilling fluid like mud.
- The member of the rig crew responsible for maintenance of the
engines. While all members of the rig crew help with major repairs, the
motorman does routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs.
