Project Velneshwar
Project Velneshwar
Goal
To Develop,Implement and Operate
proper plastic waste management
techniques in Velneshwar and
subordinating areas.
Steps to Plastic Waste Management
1. Collection
2. Segregation
3. Value Addition
4. Selling
Collection to be done from two sources
1.From households 2.From the beach and other tourist locations
1. For households
a. Each house is given a gunny bag to collect plastic waste from their house.
b. Bimonthly or according to the waste generated, a rented vehicle collects these bags around
the village and provides the houses fresh bags for further use.
c. A general request for villagers to store washed plastic as much as possible.
2. For the beach and other tourist locations
a. Big steel mesh to dispose all types of beverage bottles.
b. Separate dustbins for all other types of plastic waste to avoid light plastics flying into the
surroundings.
c. Bimonthly or according to the waste generated, a rented vehicle empties these bins to be
transported to MRF(Material Recycling Facility) .
Segregation
Collected Plastic waste to be segregated into following categories
1. Pet bottles
a. Transparent
b. Colored
2. HDPE/LDPE containers and bags
a. White and transparent
b. Colored
3. Flexible single layered plastics
a. White and transparent
b. Colored
4. Multi-layered plastics(Chips and chocolate wrappers)
5. Others (PVC,ABS,etc)
Value Addition
Labels from the bottle are first removed (These are generally BOPP or PVC). Cap
and the cap ring is removed using a blade or specialised hand tool and stored
separately (Generally made from LDPE).
Bottles are then segregated according to color. Eg Sprite bottle is green while
water bottles are transparent. Mixing colors reduce the overall selling value.
Segregated bottles are then shredded for transportation. Shredded plastic bottles
have better value than baled bottles
● HDPE/LDPE containers or bags
Once segregated according to color they are shredded and stored in large gunny
bags.
● Flexible Single layered plastics
Once segregated according to color they are shredded or baled and stored in
large gunny bags.
By doing the above said processing after segregation value is added into the
waste and can be sold at higher price also reduces transportation cost and space
requirement at the MRF.
Selling
Shredded PET waste can fetch up to 20 INR to 30 INR per kg depending upon the
level of contaminants.
LDPE/HDPE shreds and flexible plastics can be sold at a price upwards of 15 INR
per kg depending on level of contamination and proper color segregation.
All the above mentioned plastic waste to be transported to CHIPLUN MIDC area
to a recycling facility. Remaining waste to be transported to far off sites after
sufficient amount collected which is viable for transport.
