Let’s Warm Up!
Read the various passages for the various texts. After reading it,
determine whether it came from a formal publication or from a fictional
story.

________1.There are 10 persons died in the accident last June 10,

2017 at Brgy. Malayantok, Science City of Muñoz Nueva Ecija.
________2.The warrior saved a princess and they live happily ever
after.
________3.Cinderella left her shoes in the party and the prince kept
looking for her.
________4. Farmer’s Oracle, began its publication in 1797.
________5. Maleficent cursed Aurora to died when she turn 18.
What type of writer are
you?
What are your writing
practices?
The texts you read in school are different from the texts
you read during your leisure time. While the texts you read
for pleasure, such as graphic novels or magazines, can be
likened to appeal of sweet desserts, academic texts are more
like the heavy main course.

More often than not they need to be chewed and savored

for a long time before their meanings can be fully digested.
What is Academic
Writing??
Academic Writing…

Academic writing should involve expressing your own ideas in

response to what others have said. Good writing often begins not by
asserting your own opinion, but by listening actively and putting yourself
in the shoes of those who think differently.
If you do this, your writing will show a clearer understanding of
your material, and you will write with more style and motivation.
Although this can be difficult, your academic writing will benefit
dramatically.
Differentiate the Language used
in Academic from various
discipline
Academic text or language is typically used for textbooks,
tests, in classrooms and any other discipline related to
academic.
It is very different from the structure of vocabulary and
structure from everyday conversations through social
interactions.
Academic text is a formal way to present words and terms
typical for the field.
Below are some examples of academic texts.
Academic Texts Description

Published as scholarly journals, this type of academic text offers the results of
Articles research and development that can either impact the academic community or
provide relevance to nation-building.

Conference These are papers presented in scholastics conferences, and may be revised as
articles for possible publication in scholarly journals.

These provide evaluation or reviews of works published in scholarly journals.

Reviews
Theses, Dissertations These are personal researchers written by a candidate for a college or university
degree.
Pro Tip!

Aside from the fundamental differences in content and

form, the difference between academic and non-academic
texts lies in the approach you take when reading them.
Specific ideas contained in various academic text.

The specific ideas in various academic text are

dependent on the field of academic text one is reading in.
Humanities texts discuss more about the various human
expressions, such as art and languages, while the sciences
contain the scientific method that discuss the objective
result of an experiment or the specific research
methodology.
The difference between Academic and Non-
Academic Text
.
Both texts may be written with the goal to persuade, to
entertain, or to inform. They differ in their approach to these
goals, though, with academic texts relying far more on
research and factual, verifiable material for their content.
Nonacademic texts may also include research or verifiable
material, but are less likely to include references to any
source material, and may be published in a rather informal
setting.
Looking more closely at academic writing, we will see that there are
similarities to other types of writing such as business writing, especially when
it comes to the formal tone and avoiding the casual – or conversational –
language. Here are some specific examples.

• Avoid using contractions. Use “do not” instead of “don’t”.

• Avoid casual word usage. “Meager” is better than “scanty”.
• Avoid using the first person. Instead of “I will share with you the
results…“, write “The results of the study…”.
On the other hand, there are
significant differences….
Vocabulary…

Depending on the discipline of study you are writing for, you will
need to learn specific jargon. If you specialize in just one discipline,
then you can focus on mastering the vocabulary for that niche.

If you want to expand to other disciplines, then you will have to

expand your vocabulary even more.
Structure And Style…

Referring to style, using the first person is not acceptable in some

disciplines, while it is allowed in other disciplines. When it comes to
structure, different disciplines also have varying requirements.
For example, in the area of Arts and Humanities, longer
explanatory paragraphs are encouraged. These paragraphs require
topic sentences, with the idea expanded within. On the other hand,
the sciences required shorter paragraphs which are direct to the point,
using more concrete data.
Other Kinds Of Writing…

To reiterate, other kinds of writing, while also requiring

some structure, may not have such stringent rules as
compared to academic writing.
Pro Tip!
Academic writing is different from other kinds of writing in
several ways. With academic writing, a person is writing to show
what he or she has learned. The person must decide which sources
to use and how to interpret those sources.
With academic writing, the audience is usually very limited. It
may be just the student’s professor for whom the writing is being
done. Academic writing is often graded and may lead to a person
receiving a degree or a course grade.
