On
Crime Analysis and Prediction Using Data Mining
By: Geetika Singh (2010001M)
Abstract
 Data mining is procedure which includes
evaluating and examining large pre-existing
databases in order to get new information
which may be beneficial for organization.
 Many approaches for analysis and prediction

exists.
 But a few have been used in criminology

field.
 We will be discussing about few approaches

here.
Introduction
 Crime is unlawful act punishable by state or
other authority.
 Crime is a common social problem faced

world wide.
 It affects the quality of life, economic growth

and reputation of nation.

 It can be seen that crime rate is increasing

tremendously.
 Prediction of crime can help reduce crime

occurence
Crime Analysis
 The criminal data can be analyzed based on
the information from the crime scene which is
tested against the previous crime patterns
and judging by the method which is implied
to test and required measures can be taken
against it.
 Prediction can be useful for detecting the

crime in advance or by adding more security

measures to the highly affected areas.
Procedure
(based on research papers)
-Focuses majorly on missing values and clustering algorithm.
-MV and Apriori algorithm used to fill missing values and identification
of crime patterns.
-Semi-Supervised learning (combines a small amount of labeled data
with a large amount of unlabeled data)technique is used for discovery
of knowledge from crime records.
Various algorithms :
- Data Cleaning algorithms to get clean data.
- Enchancement of Clustering Algorithms(DBScan & K-Means) to find
out crime patterns
- Enhancement of Classification Algorithm to predict future crime
behavior.
- To develop anomaly detection algorithm to find out chance in crime
pattern.
- HYB algorithm compared with K-Means . Analysis shows HYB is
better than K- Means.
 AR & GA model to advance crime analysis.
 AR : Association Rules determining algorithm on 3

data sets separately(Crime,Criminal and

Geo_Crime) and then GA:Generic Algorithm applied
to find patterns among 3 data sets.
General Algorithm
Input : Raw Data of crime
Output : 3 correlated dimensions model for crime
analysis and prediction.
Steps: Understand Crime Domain, Extract target data
set,Pre-processing,Data Mining(AR and GA.)
 Visualizing techniques and Machine learning
are adopted.
 Steps : a) Preprocessing of data and
Visualization according to need. b) Data
mining
 This paper proposes web-mapping &
visualization based crime prediction tool
which is built in R(free software environment
for statistical computing and graphics) using
libraries ex. Rgooglemaps , googlevis
 Data Visualizations: Representation of data in
statistical graphics and plots. Various
Modules developed are :
a) Visualization of crime data using google
map.
b) Exact 3D view of location of crime
c) Visuals based on Type of Crime
d) Visual Hotspot for crime
e) Crime frequency report using bar chart and
graph.
Crime Prediction
-The data mining techniques were applied to the crime data for
the crime prediction based on theories in Criminology. The
criminology mainly focuses on the Rational Choice Theory
(Understand crime from the point of view of offender)and
Routine Activity Theory(states for the crime to occur target is
the one whose guardian is not present) . Based on this
following algorithms used:
 K-NN is a method used for classification.
 Naïve Bayes : based on Bayes theorem(describes the
probability of an event based on the prior knowledge of
conditions that might be related to the event). Used for
classification task.

Future: Andriod app for live capture of realistic data and

updating at the backend.
•Use of sentiment analysis by applying lexicon based method.
•Lexicon-based sentiment analysis:Calculating the sentiment
from the semantic orientation of word or phrases
•Summed up various papers and the techniques used in them
for crime analysis and prediction.
 This paper shows the study of different Frequent Pattern
Mining and Rule Mining calculation which can be applied to
crime crime pattern mining. The analysis of survey would
provide the data about what has been done already in a same
area, what is the present trend and what are the other related
areas.
 Frequent pattern mining is crucial in information mining
 FPM Approached : Candidate Generation Approach (Apriori
Algorithm), Without Candidate Generation approach(FP
growth) and Vertical Layout Approach(Eclat Algorithm)
Conclusion
In the end I would like to conclude that there
are various data mining techniques as we
went through various papers which can be
applied to analyze and predict crime which
can be of great use for security department.
