HOLY GURU OF TIBET WHO IS ALSO KNOWN
FOR HIS PEACE INITIATIVES.
Early age and Education:
 Born : 6th July 1935
 Actual name: Lhamo Dhondup
 born to a farmer’s family living in Taktser, Amdo in Tibet.
 recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso and was
later named as Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th successor of the Dalai Lamas.
 considered as the Bodhisattvas of compassion who are reborn to help the
humanity and attain Buddhahood.
 At 6 years old, he began his monastic education learning in a traditional Nalanda
curriculum
 At the age of 23, he completed his education and received a doctorate level
Geshe Lharampa degree.
Invasion, Exile and Politics:

 China invaded Tibet in 1950-51, this was the time when his holiness had to take
upon all the political stances for his country and its people.
 he escaped into exile and live in Dharamshala, India
 His visits to China and India and has helped him shape his political views and
understandings of international relations.
 In May 1990, set up the Tibetan Administration and government and assembly
was elected with his holiness having temporal and spiritual political authority
 On 14th March 2011, announced himself as retired from the political duties.
Although he still continues his work into the field of spirituality.
Awards, Travels, Popularity and Teachings:

 The 14th Dalai Lama was awarded with Noble Peace prize in 1989 for the cause
of non-violence.
 the first Noble Laureate identified for the global environmental cause.
 has won more than 150 awards from various countries
 The Dalai Lama has travelled to more than 67 countries around the world to
spread his messages on peace, non-violence, inter-religion affairs etc.
 He has participated in may events and discussion around the globe with
renowned personalities and leaders and gained popularity worldwide.
 encouraged the conversation between science and Buddhism
About author:

 Alexander Norman who is a British author, stays in


the UK.
 He is a Tibetan scholar who has an inclined
connect with the Tibetan history and its culture.
 has also co-authored with Dalai lama in some of
his books and helped his holiness in writing auto-
biographies including the freedom of exile.
