What do you mean by grammatical units ? Elaborate them with examples. Question asked in 2075.

Grammatical Unit is any: Word, Term, or (sometimes) Phrase — which functions as a single individual “Unit” within a
Grammatical Device, such as: a Clause, a Phrase, or an Interjection. Grammatical units are the elements or components on
which a grammar is built.
These units are:
morpheme,
word,
phrase,
clause and
sentence.
These are the building blocks of grammar. The whole building of grammar is built upon these units. Morpheme is the
smallest and sentence is the highest unit of grammar. Word, phrase and clause are the intermediate grammatical units.
Each unit forms the structure of the unit one rank above it. The morpheme is the minimal unit of grammatical description
in the sense that it cannot be segmented any further at the grammatical level of analysis. And sentence is the highest unit
of grammatical description since it does not functions in the structure of unit higher than itself. The units of higher rank
are composed of units of lower rank. There are five grammatical units:
• Morpheme
• Word
• Phrase
• Clause
• Sentence
• Morpheme
Morpheme is the lowest grammatical unit. A "morpheme" is a short segment of language
that meets three basic criteria:
1. It is a word or a part of a word that has meaning.
2. It cannot be divided into smaller meaningful segments without changing its meaning or
leaving a meaningless remainder.
Word:
"In spite of our familiarity with 'words' it is not always easy to say what a word is." — Loreto
Todd (1987, P.49)
Word is one of the grammatical units which is usually higher a morpheme and smaller than a
phrase in rank. Words are the smallest free- standing form that represent meaning. It can
serve as the head word in a dictionary list.
Phrase:
Phrase is one of the grammatical units usually higher than a word and lower than a clause in
rank. It can be defined as a group of words but functionally equivalent to word. It usually
contains more than one word but it can be of one word. Though it may have more words, it
is functionally and semantically a single unit.
• Clause:
Clause is one of the grammatical units higher than a phrase and smaller than a
sentence. It can be defined as a group of words with its own subject and predicate,
and included in a larger sentence.
Sentence:
we can define a sentence as an independent linguistic unit which can be
interpreted without reference to any other piece of language. For example,
The man dies.
The dog chased the cat.
That child is very tall.
The boy ran up the hill.
The above sentences can exist independently, do not rely on any other unit and
interpreted without reference to any other piece of language.
