IoT Hardware Devices
Wireless sensor node consists of three major hardware components they
are
•Sensors
•microcontrollers,
•communication medium.

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 3

Sensors
• Sensors are the most critical hardware in IoT applications and are used
to gather information from the surroundings.
• These systems are made up of power management modules, RF, energy
and sensing modules.
• Communication from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, transceiver, BAW, and duplexer
is managed by an RF module.

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 4

Microcontrollers
• A microcontroller is a device in a single integrated circuit devoted to
executing a single task and running an application. This contains
programmable peripherals for contains programmable, memory unit,
and a CPU.
• Microcontrollers are designed primarily for embedded applications and
are widely used in remotely operated electronic devices such as mobile
phones, washing machines, microwaves, and cameras.

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 5

Other IoT hardware
• Smart wearable devices such as smart memory, glasses, rings, and shoes
are examples of IoT hardware.
• Desktop, mobile phones, and tablets are standard command center and
remains an integral part of IoT application.
• Other network distribution devices like switches, hubs, and routers act
as a key connector in IoT application.

Types of IoT Network
• Network is divided depends upon the range they provide. IoT networks
are given below.
• NONO
• NFC
• PAN
• LAN
• MAN
• WAN

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 7

NONO Network
• Nano-network is a nano-scale communication network among nano-
devices. To use the various functions of nano-machines, a series of
nano-devices in a complete nano-network must be managed and
controlled by the appropriate architecture.
• Nano-network can collect important patient information in the
healthcare field and provide it to computer systems to make health
monitoring more accurate and efficient.
• In addition to the tumor detection process, the internet of Nano-Things
in health systems will provide diagnosis and support in the treatment for
patients by precise and localized medications.
CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 8
NFC
• NFC stands for Near field communication. This wireless connectivity
short-range (ECMA-340, ISO / IEC 18092) allows communication
between devices when they’re interconnected or placed within a few
centimeters.
• The standards, co-designed by Philips and Sony, provide equipped with
a manner to create a peer-to-peer (P2P) network for information
exchange.

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 9

PAN
• A Personal Area Network (PAN) is the interconnection of IT devices in
the range of a single person, generally within 10 meters.
• Take an example of a user traveling with a notebook, a private digital
assistant (PDA) and a mobile printer that might connect them with
wireless technology without the need to plug in anything.
• This type of private area network could typically also be interconnected
to the Internet or other networks without cables.

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 10

LAN
• LAN means Local Area Network. This is used for small area networks.
Computers and other mobile devices share resources, such as printer or
network storage via LAN connection.
• Wi-Fi and Ethernet are the two primary ways to enable LAN
connections. Ethernet is a specification that allows machines to interact.
Radio waves are used for the Wi-Fi connection of computers, printers,
mobiles and etc.
• A user has access to files stored on the LAN server with others; a
network administrator has read and write access.

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 11

MAN
• MAN stands for the Metropolitan Area Network. This is a
computer network that helps users connect with computer resources in a
geographical area.
• It can cover a smaller region than WAN (Wide Area Network) but is
bigger than the Local Area Network (LAN) LAN area.
• It can also be used to define interconnections between them point to
point in a metropolitan region with several local area networks

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 12

WAN
• WAN stands for the Wide-area Networks. Wide Area Networks also
called a data network. Basically, this network also use to connect the
cities, country, states.
• A virtual private (VPN) network allows WAN sites to connect. Wired
and wireless technology can include WAN connections. Enterprise
WANs help users to share access to central apps, services, and other
sources.

Protocols of IoT
• BLUETOOTH
• WIFI
• Z-Wave
• SigFox
• Thread
• Cellular
• 6LoWPAN
• RFID
• Zigbee

IoT Hardware Providers

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 15

Arduino
• Arduino is the omnipresent name in the space for electronic
development.
• The company offers a range of open-source development kits, billing
software, and microcontrollers

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 16

Adafruit
• Adafruit offers DIY electronic hacking courses online and provides a
space to learn.
• ‘Adafruit Feather’ is a production line of boards designed for fly
prototyping.
• This production line includes a wide catalog of accessories that speed up
IoT application development.

CS-801 SELO:5,11,13 REFERENCE:R1,R2 17
