The Health Care Profession:
 Is defined as a profession in which a person exercises skill and judgment or provides
a service related to:
a. The preservation or improvement of the health of the individual.
b. The treatment or care of individuals who are sick, injured, harmed, disabled or
infirmed.

 Profession and professional come from the latin word “profession” which means a
public declaration with the force of a promise.
 Professions are groups which declare in a public way that their members will act in a
certain ways and that the group and society may discipline those who fail to do so.

 Professionals have a fiduciary duty toward those they serve. This means that
professionals have a particularly stringent duty to assure that their decisions and
actions serve the welfare of their patients or clients , even at some cost to
themselves.
PROFESSIONS CODE OF ETHICS
Professionalism in health care requires that one strives for excellence in the following
areas which become part of the attitudes, behaviors and skills integral to patient care:
a. Altruism- a health care professional is obligated to attend to the best interest of
patients rather than self-interest.
b. Accountability- a health care professional is accountable to their patients, to society
on issues of public health and to their profession.
c. Excellence Health care professionals are obligated to make a commitment to life-
long learning.
d. Duty- a health care professional should be available and responsive, accepting a
commitment to service within the profession and the community.
e. Honor and integrity- health care professionals should be committed to being fair,
truthful and straightforward in their interactions with patients and the profession.
f. Respect for others- a health care professional should demonstrate respect for
patients and their families and to the other members of the team.
MEDICAL ETHICS
Principal topics in medical ethics includes:
a. Physician’s deceptions and violations of patient confidentiality
b. Rights of patients or their surrogates to retain life-sustaining treatments or
request assistance in dying
c. Drug experiments on children
d. Demented or dying patients
e. Incompetent or desperate patients
f. Bias- free definitions of health, death, disease, and futility of treatment.
g. Removing viable organs from patients who are brain dead or in cardiac
arrest
h. Grounds for fetal testing, selection and abortion
i. Involuntary hospitalization and treatment of mentally disturbed people.
j. Conflicts of interest between physicians and their employers and third
party payers, public and private.
QUALITIES OF A HEALTH CARE PROVIDER:
a. Open- accepts need for joint planning and decision relative to
health care in a particular situation.-Not resistance to change.
b.Tactful- does not embarrass but gives constructive criticism
c. Coordinator- brings into consonance or harmony the health
care activity.
d.Objective- unbiassed and fair in decision making.
e.Good listener- available for clients to voice their sentiments
and needs.
f. Efficient- knowledgeable about everything relevant to his
practice.
g. Flexible- able to top cope with different restrictions.
h.Critical thinker- decides on what has been analyzed.
