What is Airborne Internet?
 The meaning of the word airborne is  Aircraft-ground
transported by air.  Ground-ground
 The Airborne Internet is a proposed  Aircraft-aircraft
network in which all nodes would be
located in aircraft.
 An internet broadband which provides
high speed wireless internet connection
by placing aircraft in fixed path over
hundreds of cities.
 One of the major achievement of
NASA.
 It aims at providing communication
link between-
Why Airborne Internet?
There are mainly two reasons for the
development of Airborne Internet: Small aircraft transportation
system: Need for a
Need for higher bandwidth: o SATS controls traffic inhigher
air.
In an airborne Internet, there is bandwidth

Working of Airborne Internet

been proposed for putting
communication nodes aloft. • The airplane specially designed for
high altitude flight will circle at high
• First method- manned aircraft altitudes for extended periods of time
• Second method- unmanned aircraft • Three successive shifts on station of 8
hours each can provide continuous
coverage of an area for 24 hours per
day, 7 days per week.

with NASA Helios Aircraft
Angel Technologies
• It is planning an airborne Internet network, called High Altitude Long
Operation (HALO), which would use lightweight planes to circle
overhead and provide faster data delivery.
• Consumers would get a connection comparable to DSL

The Proteus Plane

Sky Station International
• It is counting on its blimps to beat Angel to the punch in the race to
deliver high-speed Internet access from high altitudes.
• Sky Station calls its blimps lighter-than-air platforms, and plans to
station these airships over at least 250 cities worldwide, one over each
city.

Blimps
AeroVironment with NASA
• They are working on a solar-powered, lightweight plane that could fly
over a city for six months or more, at 60,000 feet, without landing.
• It would work like the HALO network.

Airborne Internet Consortium

The mission of the Airborne Internet Consortium (AIC) is to define, develop, and
promote the common system elements necessary to deploy comprehensive
aviation-based digital datalink capabilities throughout the nation using evolving
Internet technologies.
Advantages
No or Significant Time delay
Provide Critical Information
Cost Advantage Over Satellite
More Productive Time
Uses Solar Energy
Overcome Last-Mile

Disadvantages
Affect Our Environment
Cannot Replace Satellite Internet
Conclusion
• Airborne Internet is about information connectivity. This
technology has a wide range of utilities in the field of
aviation services like aircraft monitoring, weather
information, etc.
• There will be an increased demand for greater bandwidth
from Airborne Internet in aircraft.
• Airborne Internet will start out with a few obvious
applications, but as bandwidth capability increases, so will
the number of applications.
