Historical Significance:
 Daman is a “CITY OF TWIN FORT, each built on the opposite bank of river Daman Ganga.
 Portuguese acquired Daman & Diu as their grand design to control the trade of Indian Ocean.
Portuguese acquired Daman from Shah’s of Gujarat.
They attacked it several times and finally obtained it in 1559 and there after it was under Portuguese rule till it’s liberation on 1961.
 The fort houses all kind of major administrative buildings, residences of officials, governor’s house & farm lands.
Appealing historical aspects of the fort are the many churches, chapels and monasteries.

Architectural Description:
The Fort is polygonal in plan with projections at regular intervals of about 500 feet and carrying 10 splayed angular bastions.
The parapet above the fortification walls is without merlons but is provided with loopholes.
The terraces close to the top of the wall are connected to the inner ground surface by open flight of steps at many places
The main street that runs from land gate to sea gate
All along the inner wall, there are barracks for defence personnel.
The fort is protected by a moat (that is now dry) on southern side and by the river on northern side.
The ancient fort is famous for housing a large number of cannons
On the Northern side within the confine of the fort are located the palaces, the secretariat and other official buildings.

• MANY ORIGINAL PORTUGUESE BUILDINGS ARE NOW CONVERTED & USED AS GOV. OFFICES, BUT
THEIR ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE IS STILL INTACT. MOSTLY THE BUILDINGS CAN BE CONSIDERED TO
BE IN ADAPTIVE REUSE. HENCE, PRESERVING THE OLD DAMAN
.
• THE BUILDINGS ARE PAINTED IN MEDITERRANEAN PASTEL COLOURS LIKE OCHRE, BLUE, PINK
MAKING THE WHOLE AREA PRETTY.

• THE DAMAN MUNICIPAL COUNCIL (D.M.C.) IS ONE OF THE OLDEST BUILDING & CONTINUES TO BE AN
INSTITUTION FOR LOCAL SELF GOV.
THE CITY OF TWIN FORT WHY WAS THE FORT BUILT?
• DAMAN IS THE CITY OF TWIN FORT, EACH BUILT ON THE OPPOSITE BANKS OF THE DAMAN- • THEY WERE BUILT TO PROTECT THE ADMINISTRATION AND REGION FROM FOREIGN TRADERS.

• THE NAME “ DAMAN” IS PROBABLY DERIVED FROM “ DAMAN GANGA RIVER”. • IT WAS EASY FOR SHIPS TO LAY ANCHOR.
• PORTUGUESE ACQUIRED DAMAN & DIU AS A PART OF THEIR GRAND DESIGN TO CONTROL THE • IT ALSO HOUSED POST & TELGRAPH FACILITIES, HENCE HELPED TRADE & COMMERCE-
TRADE OF INDIAN COMMUNICATION.

• DAMAN RENOWNED FOR IT’S DOCKS & SHIP-BUILDING YARDS.

• FROM 1559 – IT WAS THE RULE OF PORTUGUESE TILL IT’S LIBERATION ON 19TH DECEMBER, 1961.

• LATER IN DAMAN & DIU BECAME A PART OF THE U.T. OF GOA, DAMAN & DIU UNDER
GOVERNMENT OF INDIA.

• NANI DAMAN FORT IS THE SMALLEST FORT AMONG BOTH THE FORTS.

• FORT WAS USED FOR MILITARY PURPOSE.


• THIS FORT WAS BUILT TO PROTECT & CONTROL THE MARITIME TRADE ON ARABIAN SEA
• IT WAS BUILT OF SANDSTONE ROCKS. COAST.

• FORTS WERE APPROACHED FROM A BRIIDGE NAMELT – DAMAN- GANGA BRIDGE • COMMODITIES LIKE --- PEPPER, TEXTILES, SANDALWOOD, JEWELS, HORSES, SILK, MUSK,
AFRICAN SLAVES WERE IMPORTED VIA THESE FORTIFICATIONS.

FORT HAS TWO PARTS:

1. UPPER PART : IT HAS UNDERGROUND WATER STORAGE CHAMBER, GUN POWDER ROOMS,
LIGHTHOUSE, 10- BASTIONS, SECRET PASSAGE USED DURING TIME OF WAR & EMERGENCY.

2. LOWER PART : SAFE BERTH FOR PORTUGUESE SHIPS.

• MOTI DAMAN FORT WAS THE MAIN ADMINISTRATIVE AREA/ CENTER. IT HAS GOVERNMENT
HOUSES, OFFICIALS , RESIDENCE SEMINARY, CHURCHES, SCHOOLS, FARM- AGRICULTURE
LANDS.

INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN PROPOSAL
 AIM: To promote heritage walk as a tool to sustain the historical tourism. To keep the life of the historical monuments alive by preserving and
maintaining the old Portuguese historic fabric. Also to affiliate the native , tourists , heritage & coast line.

• STATEMENT: By providing a heritage walk will ensure to make Moti daman fort area a brand to seize the experience of Portuguese bygone era
and also providing an economic opportunity. Storytelling creates impact and for centuries have been a way to connect with places. The power of
stories on heritage walks makes a difference and creates an emotional connection encouraging communities, cultures, and environments to share
their past. The idea to provide a museum of Portuguese will help in depicting the culture of local Daman and the Portuguese life of bygone era.
Hence giving the tourist the whole scenario of Daman.

• OBJECTIVE : Providing a recreational & aesthetic experience for the tourists & to facilitate some basic requirements of natives.

26.1 Use Provisions 26.1.1

Lands in the U 1 may be used for any of the following purposes, namely.

a) Residences;

b) Retail shops, Restaurants, Hotel and Banks;

c) Offices of local authorities, local offices of the Government and public utility concerns, and
offices of the professionals and others providing similar services;

d) Personal service establishments and repair services;

e) Educational, medical, social or religious institutions, libraries and museums;

f) Research and development institutes, scientific institutes and laboratories and training institutes;

g) Vehicle parking areas, garages, petrol pumps, weigh-bridges, service stations and automobile repair
workshops;

h) Television and broadcasting Studios, Film Studios, Cinema, Art Galleries, Exhibition Centres and

CRZ CATEGORY • The land area HTL to 500m on the landward side along the sea front.
• The land area between HTL & LTL which is will be termed as INTER TIDAL
ZONE.

CLASSIFICATION OF COASTAL
REGULATION ZONE – CRZ:

1. CRZ-1 :
•All reserved forest / proposed reserved forest of Daman

•Moti Daman Fort & 200m belt around the Moti Daman Fort

•Nani Daman Fort & 200m belt around the Nani Daman Fort

•All sand dunes in Daman

•Along the rivers ( Kolak, DamanGanga, Kalai, Creeks, Bck waters the CRZ
areas having Mangroves & Mud flats are classified as CRZ-I.

•All mangroves within an area of 1000 sq.m. or more with a buffer zone
atleast 50m.

•The sea shore where the Kolak river meets the sea.

•The area between Low Tide Line ( LTL) & High Tide Line ( HTL).

2. CRZ-II :
• NANI DAMAN SIDE : Area starting from the northern boundary
of municipal area & extending up to 200m in the northern side of
Nani daman.

• MOTI DAMAN SIDE : Area starting from 200m south of Moti


Daman Fort & extending upto the southern boundary of Daman
Municipal Area.
• LOCATION : Kodhidhar Beach, Sunset Point, Diu, Diu Island.
