The Cordillera Region

The cordillera is located in one of the highest


mountain ranges in the Philippines.
There are six provinces in Cordillera.
Abra
Apayao
Benguet
Ifugao
Kalinga
Mountain Province
The rice terraces is one of the “7 Wonders of the World”
Badiw – a ceremonial song for the dead
It is sung in leader-chorus style.
Ullalim – epic song of Kalingas
It is sung in solo.

1. Gangsa Ensemble – a single handled
smooth surfaced gong with narrow rim
Two ways of playing the gangsa

 Toppaya style – the musicians play the surface of


the gangsa with their hand while sitting with a
single gangsa resting on each legs
 Pattung style – the gangsa is suspended from the
musician’s left hand and played with a padded
stick held by the right hand
2. Bamboo Solo/Ensemble
 Kubing (Jews Harp) – held horizontally with the tongue in front of the
opened mouth while the left end is either strummed or plucked by the
hand. (Classification: Idiophone)
 Saggeypo – a bamboo pipe that is closed on one end by a node with the
open end. It is held against the lower lip of the player as it is blown directly
across the top (Classification: Aerophone)
 Diwdiw-as – five or more different sizes of slender bamboos that are ties
together (Classification: Aerophone)
 Tongatong – set of five to six bamboo tubes with one hole on top and comes
in graduated sizes (Classification: Idiophone)
 Bungkaka – bamboo buzzer (Classification: Idiophone)
 Patatag – bamboo xylophone (Classification: Idiophone)
Music of Mindoro
Mindoro – an island located in southwest Luzon
 Composed of 2 provinces: Occidental Mindoro and Oriental
Mindoro
 The main language of Mindoro is Tagalog
 Some parts are influences by the native Visayan at Mangyan
languages
 Mangyans speak the Hanunuo language
Other indigenous tribes found in Mindoro
 Ratagnon – occupies the southernmost tip of Mindoro
 Alangan – occupies the northern part of both Oriental
and Occidental Mindoro
 Iraya– a group of people based in the upland part of
Northwest Mindoro

 Iyaya – lullaby
 Ayung or Ngayung – ritual chant igway
 Marayaw – spirit song
 Pamuybuyen (legend) – means “fear of water”
Representative Song/Genre

 Ambahan – one of the indigenous vocal music of Mindoro


that is often presented as a chant and inscribed in the
bamboo tubes called luka.
Elements used in Ambahan: rhythmic poetic lines,
monophonic, distinct melody, meter with seven syllables
 Igway – word used by Mangyans for “song”

Instrumental Ensemble
Lantoy – tiny flute that can be played either by nose or mouth
(Aerophone)
Agung ensemble – consists of two light gongs played by two
men squatting on the floor (Idiophone)
Bangsi – external pipe flute (Aerophone)
Kalutang – percussion stick played in pairs to produce
harmonies on second, thirds, and fourths (Idiophone)
Budyung – bamboo trumpet
Pituh – a flute that is diatonically tuned with fingerholes (no
thumb hole) (Aerophone)

Gitgit – three-stringed indigenous violin with human hair as strings
Kudyapi – a kind of flute
