CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

S.Y. 2020 - 2021

HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCE
THE CURRICULUM DESIGN

HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS

INFLUENCE THE CURRICULUM DESIGN
“IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY WHERE THE
MOST VALUABLE SKILL YOU CAN SELL IS
YOUR KNOWLEDGE, A GOOD EDUCATION
IS NO LONGER JUST A PATHWAY TO
OPPORTUNITY – IT IS A PREREQUISITE.”
– BARACK OBAMA
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCE THE
CURRICULUM DESIGN
WHAT IS ECONOMICS?
In the website Investopedia.com an article written by
Haye, Adam (2020), he define economics as a social science
concerned with the production, distribution, consumption of
goods and services.
According to Wikipedia, education economic or the
economics of education is the study of economic issues
relating to education, including the demand for education, the
financing and provision of education, and the comparative
efficiency of varied educational programs and policies.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
Political
• Copyright Statement of The Commonwealth of
Learning, (2000)
One of the reasons why education is financed by
governments is to improve the country’s economy.
Therefore, the national curriculum should concern
itself with the requirements of the economy.
LEGAL BASES OF PHILIPPINE
EDUCATION SYSTEM
Under the 1987 Constitution, article XIV,
section 1 states that “The state shall protect
and promote the right of all citizens to quality
education at all levels and shall take
appropriate steps to make such education
accessible to all.
THE EDUCATION ACT 1982
• In Section 2 of this act states that “…this act shall apply to and
govern both formal and non-formal system in public and private
schools in all levels of the entire educational system.”
• And also under this act it states the following to the Maintenance
of Quality Education
1. Voluntary Accreditation (Section 29)
2. Teachers and Administrators obligations and
qualifications (Section 16 and 17)
3. Government Financial Assistance to Private Schools
(Section 41)
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCE THE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• As a teacher, we are required classroom supplies such
as:
• Textbooks,
• Charts,
• Equipment, and
• Other school supplies that the learner will need.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCE THE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• These materials are products of industry.
• Without these materials, learning is compromised.
• It is therefore crucial that serious consideration be
given to economic demands when designing the
curriculum.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• The children that we teach will need to be
employed.
• The skills needed by the industry should be
translated into the content and learning
experiences of these children.
• The skills, knowledge-based and attitudes
required by industry should be developed in the
classroom.
• From the research paper of Odiemo, Luke (2008)
• He highlighted 2 kinds of situation of economic
factors influences in curriculum
design/development
Economic development as an outcome of
economic growth
Economic development as the process that
generates growth
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AS AN
OUTCOME OF ECONOMIC
GROWTH
• It is because of the cultural
phenomenon of “globalization”
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AS
THE PROCESS THAT GENERATES
GROWTH

• The institutional changes actually

are economic development itself.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCE
THE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Also the economic factor determines the
content and method of an education
system.
• It is important to note that formal education
is often possible where production
exceeds consumption.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCE
THE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Diversity
In indigenous traditional education people were
trained depending on the economic conditions
and needs of the community.
From an economic perspective, expenditures on
education refers to the amount or percentage of
national revenue spent on education by both
individuals and the government.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS INFLUENCE
THE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• If the economic condition is poor, education
becomes backward in many aspects while
if the economy of the country is strong,
then educational aims and the curriculum
are given a special direction for making the
country prosperous.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• For example, in the USA and Japan,
education system is patterned so as to
make the individual graduate, strong and
capable enough to stand on his or her
own feet after having received education.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• While in India, college and university
graduate do not know where to go after
completing their education and most of
the students continue to stay on in the
university as long as they can so that one
can post pone for a few years the problem
of the educated – unemployed.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• The poorer classes in the communities
tend to be content with minimum
education for their children, and the richer
classes are known to be able to keep their
children longest at school because they
can afford to meet the costs.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• In a subsistence, economy, that is, one is
which people are just able to make ends
meet, educational systems tend to be
informal occurring on the job.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• For example, Britain, France, Japan and
the USA among other strong economy
countries, they provide enough grants that
are allocated to their systems of
education; actually they have enough
funds to support all educational
programmed in their education systems.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• In fact, the education system should be
such that, it provides opportunities for the
maximum development of each citizen.
• Actually by developing individuals that the
overall growth of the nation can be
guaranteed.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Proper planning of education system also
calls for the establishment of a proper
national character, which if it lacks, then
the necessary leadership and co-
operation of the people will also be
lacking.
HOW ECONOMIC FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Lack of proper national character, means
that the national education system will not
be able to realize its objectives.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL
FACTORS INFLUENCE
CURRICULUM DESIGN
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• According to a statement from the
Commonwealth of Learning (2000) – computer
is the latest technological innovation that will
have a significant impact on education and
society.
• If you are not computer literate, you may feel
that you are not up-to-date.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• In some areas, you may have noticed that
a number of schools have introduced
computer as one of the subjects.
• The intention is to equip the learners with
the requisite computer skills and
knowledge.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• In addition to computers, other forms of
electronic media are being used in teaching.
• These have provided a variety of learning
experiences and have facilitated individualized
learning.
• Curriculum designers cannot afford to ignore
technology and its influence on the curriculum.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Example : Diversity in learning
opportunities
 Curriculum development affect
from diversity opens learning
opportunities
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCES CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Social diversity including religion, culture and
social groupings affects curriculum
development
• because these characteristics influence the
types of topics and methods for teaching
information. Developing relevant curriculum
takes into account society’s expectations,
accommodating group traditions and promoting
equality.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
• They are always there, like phones or
cars or computers now.
• In any given year or region, people
work with what's available.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
• If you want to talk about huge influences,
you have to look at intellectual and
philosophical context. Beliefs make a
difference.
• In the US, there are two huge swirling
adversaries.
Huge swirling adversaries

• The first is traditional education, which is the

distillation of Western civilization and all the
things that the smartest people valued and
wanted to see preserved for the next
generations. (All of my work is intended to
remind people that this tradition is worth
preserving.)
Huge swirling adversaries
• The opposing force is called Progressive
education, which is the distilled wisdom of
collectivist, socialist, totalitarian,
Communist, and anti-Western thinking.
Huge swirling adversaries
• In ways that are very hard to disentangle
Progressive perspectives end up being
the friend and tool of people who want to
overthrow existing authority and seize
power for themselves.
• In practice, what this means, confusingly
enough, is that something calling itself
an educational philosophy is more properly
understood as a revolutionary
philosophy. It's what you adopt if you
intend to change governments.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
From the a publication of the Qualification and
Curriculum Development Agency:
• Technological changes cannot also be ignored
in education.
• Technology and especially modern technology
also influence the education system of the
country.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Historically, emphasis on industrial and
technical education followed the industrial
revolution.
• Technology affects the type of education
as well as the means of instruction.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• With the emergence of computer
technology, internet technology, this has
revolutionized the whole education
system especially in the developed
countries.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Through information communication
technology, home learning has been
made possible.
• Universities are also adopting projects
like AUV and e-learning.
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
• Today the influence of technology in
education cannot be ignored.
• Indeed the challenge is for the
educational administrators and policy
makers to see to it that the right
infrastructure is in place
HOW TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS
INFLUENCE CURRICULUM DESIGN
in order to allow the use of information
communication technology fully and be able
to reap its maximum benefits in the
education system especially in the
developing world.
SUMMARY
• ECONOMIC FACTORS
• influence goals, content and
learning experience
• Influence material production
• Influence standards of academic
attainment
• TECHNOLOGICAL FACTOR - same as
economic factors
SUMMARY

• In designing a suitable and relevant

curriculum, curriculum planners should
always consider factors that will affect the
learners experience in learning.
