LEARNING
OBJECTIVES:
 Describe the location and
structure of the adrenal glands.
 Identify the hormones produced
by adrenal medulla and adrenal
cortex.
 Identify clinical problems
Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory
“Suprarenal glands”

 glandular and
neuroendocrine tissue
 have a rich blood
WHAT ISsupply
ADRENAL
GLANDS?
 highest blood flow in
the body

Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory

STRCUTURE &
LOCATION
 Triangular in shape
 behind the inferior
vena cava

 crescent in
shape
 behind the
stomach
Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory
STRCUTURE &
LOCATION
 weighs 4-5 grams
 lies superiorly
 have distinct inner
medulla and outer cortex
 secrets hormones and
acts as “chemical
messenger”

Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory

ADRENAL MEDULLA
 composed of knots of
nervous tissue
 secretes
catecholamines:
- epinephrine
- norepinephrine
 cope with short term
stress

ADRENAL MEDULLA

ADRENAL MEDULLA

Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory

ADRENAL CORTEX
 secretes steroid hormone
 composed of three
distinct zone/layers:
- Zona glomerulosa
- Zona fasciculata
- Zona reticularis

Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory

ZONA GLOMERULOSA
 thin region of
columnar cells
 produce
mineralocorticoids
 regulates mineral
content in the blood
aldosterone – major
mineralocorticoids

Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory

ZONA FASCICULATA
 thickest zone (>70%)
 produce
glucocorticoids
- Cortisol & Cortisone
- promotes normal cell
metabolism
- increasing the blood
glucose level
Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory
ZONA RETICULARIS
 linear arrangement
and round clump of
cells
 produces
glucocorticoids and
small amount of sex
steroids

Zool128- Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory

 CUSHING’S DISEASE
- characterized by high blood glucose levels and
accumulation of lipid deposits on the face or neck
DISORDERS INVOLVING THE
- hypersecretion of cortisol
 ADDISON’S
ADRENAL GLANDS DISEASE
-hyposecretion of corticosteroids
- rare disorder; causes low blood glucose levels and low
blood sodium levels
