What is GRINDING?
Grinding is the machining process improving the surface
finish of the job and producing small chips. The tool used
for this process is the grinding wheel. It is a cutting tool in
which millions of microscopic abrasive grains are bond
together.
Basic functions of grinding wheel
(1) Removal of stock

(2) Generation of cylindrical , flat and curved surfaces

(3) Production of highly finished surfaces

(4) Cutting off operations

(5) Production of sharp edges and points

Grinding Machine Types
ROUGH GRINDERS PRECISION GRINDERS

*Floor or bench grinders *Surface grinders

*Portable grinders *Cylindrical grinders

*Abrasive belt grinders *Tool and cutter grinders

*Swing frame grinder *Internal grinders

*Special grinding machine

Grinding Wheel
A Grinding Wheel is a wheel composed of an abrasive
compound and used for various grinding and abrasive
machining operations.
The wheel is generally made from a composite material
consisting of coarse particle aggregate pressed and bonded
together by a cementing matrix(bond) to form a solid , circular
shape.
Specification of grinding wheel
(1) Abrasive

(2) Bond

(3) Grain size

(4) Grade

(5) Structure of wheels

Abrasives
An Abrasive is an hard and tough substance , having sharp edges . It cuts , wear away material softer
than itself.

The abrasive aggregate is selscted primarily according to the hardness of the material being cut.
Chemical compatibility is also a concern.

Abrasive grains constitute the central component of any grinding wheel and the hardness and friability
of the grinding materials will significantly affect the behaviour of a given wheel.
Bonds
The bond is an adhesive substance which cements or hold together the abrasive grains to form grinding
wheel.

Depending upon the application bond imparts the quality of hardness of the grinding wheel.

The selection of the bond upon the accuracy ,the required surface finidh and the nature of grinding
operation.
Grain size
The size of the abrasive particle is known as grain size or grit size.

SELECTION OF GRAINS:
1. The size of grain is determined by sorting or grading the material by passing through
screens with number of meshes per linear inch.
2. The selection of grain size is processed by:
a) Nature of grinding operation
b)Material of grinded
c)Surface finish required
Grade of wheels
Structure of grinding wheel represents to the grainspacing or the manner in which abrasives grains are
distributed throughout the wheel.

The entire volume is occupied by the abrasive grains , bonding material and pores.

The primary purpose of structure is to provide chip clearance and it may open medium or dense.
Structure of wheel
The shape of grinding wheel should be such that it permits proper contact between the wheel and all of
the surface should be ground.

They are classified into following groups:-

a) Straight side grinding wheel

b) Cylindrical wheels

c) Cup wheels

d) Dish wheels
Wheel nomenclature
It consists of 6 symbols representing following properties of grinding wheels:-

1) Manufacturer symbol

2) Types of abrasives

3) Grain size

4) Structure

5) Type of bond

6) Grade
