It was only in the

theatre that I lived

Oscar Wilde
Theatre
is a form of performing art that
uses actors and actresses to present
the experience of a real or imagined
event before a live audience.
The performers may communicate
this experience to the audience
through combinations of gesture,
speech, song, music, and dance.
Elements of art, such as scenery
and lighting are used to create a
specific atmosphere of the play.
These two masks
symbolize Tragedy and
Comedy, the main theatre
genres. The name of the sad
mask is Melpomene or Muse
of Tragedy and the name of
the happy mask is Thalia or
Muse of Comedy.
Ancient Greek theatre
The first theatre appeared in
Ancient Greece. The Greek theatre
history began with festivals
honoring their God Dionysus.
The theatres were open air and built
in a semi-circular shape -
amphitheatre. The stage was a
raised area in the centre of the
theatre. All the actors were men.
They wore large masks that
exaggerated facial features and
emotions. They played tragedies or
comedies. Actors in comedies wore
bright colours. Actors in tragedies
wore dark colours.
THE GLOBE
Theatre became extremely popular
in Britain in the Golden age of
Queen Elizabeth I. At that time W.
Shakespeare wrote and performed
his brilliant plays in Globe Theatre
which was built in London in 1599.
The Globe was destroyed by the
Puritans in 1644. It was
reconstructed only in 1989. The
new theatre is not a perfect replica
of the original building. But actors
at the rebuilt Globe use the original
pronunciation of Elizabethan
English in performances of William
Shakespeare's plays.
Shakespeare’s plays are still popular with modern theatres all over the
world.

Theatre, London. in Odessa at festival of theatres “Moloko”
Modern drama theatre of the
21st century
differs from traditional theatre in
several ways: minimum scenery
and plain costumes. The idea is to
draw the audience’s attention to the
events and emotions performed, to
make the audience a part of the
play.
In the photo you can see an episode
from “Animal tales” performed by
Theatre 19 from Kharkov. “Animal
tales” is written by Don Nigro, one
of the most famous playwrights in
the modern theatre world.
If you have an opportunity to
attend this play in Odessa, take my
advice and buy tickets!
Movie stars on stage
All of you like going to the cinema.
No doubt, you know many
Hollywood stars. But do you know
that almost every movie star is first
of all a theatre star? For example, if
you think that Daniel Radcliffe’s
best role is Harry Potter you are
mistaken! He’s a brilliant actor of
Old Vic theater in London.
In the photo you can see Daniel as
a leading character of “The cripple
from Inishmaan” by Martin
MacDonagh, a famous Irish
playwright. However Radcliffe
failed to received a Tony
nomination for his performance in
this play.
