Let’s start with
some new words!!
Vocabulary topic: Quality
Evaluate /ɪˈvæl.ju.eɪt/ (v): to judge or
calculate the quality, importance,
amount or value of something
Value /ˈvæl.juː/ (v): to give a
jugdement about how much money
something might be sold for
Decay /dɪˈkeɪ/ (v): to become gradually
damaged, worse or less, to cause something
to do this
ex: Sugar makes your teeth decay.
The role of extended family has been decaying for some time.
Contaminate /kənˈtæm.ɪ.neɪt/ (v): to make
something less pure or make it poisonous
Decline /dɪˈklaɪn/ (v): to gradually
become less, worse or lower
Devastate /ˈdev.ə.steɪt/ (v): to destroy a
place or thing completely or cause
great damage
Surpass /səˈpɑːs/ (v):
If one person or thing surpasses another, the first is better than, or
has more of a particular quality than, the second.
Ex: He was determined to surpass the achievements of his older
brothers.

If something surpasses expectation, it is much better than it


was expected to be.
Ex: Conrad Black gave an excellent party that surpassed expectations.
Outclass /ˌaʊtˈklɑːs/ (v):
 If you are outclassed by someone, they are a lot better than
you are at a particular activity.
Ex: The hotel is serviceable, but outclassed by its bistro.

 If one thing outclasses another thing, the first thing is of a


much higher quality than the second thing.
Ex: These planes are outclassed by the most recent designs.
(usually used in passive form)
Wreck /rek/ (v) : »to destroy or badly
damage something
»to spoil a chance, plan, etc.
Ex: The explosion wrecked one house
and shattered nearby windows.
The deal was wrecked by the recent turmoil in
the debt markets.
Worsen /ˈwɜː.sən/ (v): to become worse or
to make something become worse
Ex:  As the company's financial problems worsened,
several director resigned.
 The continued supply of arms to the region will only worsen
the situation.
Mini game 1: Newton’s
Rules:

 You are the thieves wanting to steal apples from Newton’s apple
tree because you believe they have magic.
 However, on the way to Newton’s garden, your gang have
conflicts and decide to divide into 2 teams.
 You really think your mission is easy peasy, don’t you? Think
again! Newton’s tricky than you thought. Each apple has a
question, you have to answer the question if you want to take those
tasty fruit, but you have to take it in order. Mr.Newton doesn’t like
you to cut the line!
What if you answer incorrectly? Well, you know the consequence!

and stylish.
ex: She’s really smartened herself up since
she finished college.
 to improve your personal appearance or
the appearance of something.
ex: You’ll need to buy a suit and smarten
up a bit for the interview.
 to begin working more effectively.
ex: The industry needs to smarten up its
act in relation to advertising and
promotion.
