INTRODUCTION
OF GAS WELL TESTING

THE PURPOSE OF GAS WELL TESTING

• The main purpose of gas well testing is to determine the

capability of a formation to produce gas.
• To estimate skin factor or drilling and completion related
damage to gas well.
• To obtain reservoir parameters.
GAS SYSTEMS
OF FLUID FLOW
GAS RADIAL DIFFUSIVITY
By combining the transient flow with Darcy’s law, the equation represents as follows:

By combining the continuity and Darcy’s law equation, the equation get obtained in
general forms as follows:

For the Radial Flow of Equation 2:

GAS RADIAL DIFFUSIVITY
 If
assuming the flow is laminar and the rock properties are constant
and neglecting the gravity, the equation is obtained for the
isothermal conditions as follows:

For the Radial Flow of Equation 4:

In gasfield units:

Equation5 can be modified into simultaneous flow of gas, oil,
and water. The equation as follows:

DELIVERABILITY TEST IN GAS WELL

This section consist of Flow-After-Flow, Isochronal, and

Modified Isochronal Test.
GAS WELL TEST USING DELIVERABILITY TESTS

GAS WELL DELIVERABILITY DELIVERABILITY TESTS

GOALS: METHODS:
• Productivity of a gas well is • Tests that use all stabilized
prescribed with deliverability data.
testing. • Tests that use a combination
• Deliverability tests are used of stabilized and transient
to specify reservoir rate- data.
pressure behavior. • Tests that use all transient
• The Deliverability tests obtain data.
an inflow performance curve
or gas-backpressure curve.
STABILIZED FLOW

If psia, the equation is assumed as method. Meanwhile if psia, the equation is

assumed as method.

From the Equation 10, analysis of gas well testing would be determined in
regard to method.
FLOW-AFTER-FLOW TEST

• This test is also known as backpressure test. This type of test

produce the well at a stabilized flow rates.
• Flow-After-Flow test is applied to high permeability formation.
• The drawbacks of backpressure test are wasting valuable natural
gas and generate water coning.
• But the advantage is the backpressure test takes a short time in
steady-state flow conditions.

ISOCHRONAL TEST

 • Isochronal test is related

to the principle that the
radius of investigation is
a function of the flow
rate.
MODIFIED ISOCHRONAL TEST

• The modified isochronal test is equal to the isochronal test, except

the shut-in periods.
• The drawback of modified isochronal is less accurate than the
isochronal test as the shut-in pressure cannot switch-over as the
average reservoir pressure.
PRESSURE DRAWDOWN TEST

In this section, the Pressure vs Time, Slope, and Skin Factor

written as part of discussion
PRESSURE DRAWDOWN TEST

•Pressure Drawdown Test flow a well to obtain reservoir parameters at a

constant flow rates.
• The use of this test is to obtain permeability, skin factor, and reservoir volume.

PRESSURE BUILDUP TEST

• In this section, the Pressure vs Time, Slope, and Skin

Factor written as part of discussion.
PRESSURE BUILDUP TEST
•Pressure Build up Test is the simplest method to perform the gas well to
analyze its reservoir characteristics.
• Pressure Buildup Test uses the data from the Pressure Drawdown Test.
