BRINGING UP KARI
About the author
• Dhan Gopal Mukherji is probably the first popular Indian
writer in English. He was born on July 6,1890, in a village
near CALCUTTA on the edge of a jungle called Kajangal.
His famous works are KARI- THE ELEPHANT(1922), MY
BROTHERS FACE, HARI..THE JUNGLE LAD, RAM-THEHERO
OF INDIA, THE STORY OF A TIGER.

Kari, a five month old baby elephant, lives and


grows up with his nine-year-old friend and
keeper.
Kari doesn't eat much– just about sixteen
kilograms of delicious twigs a day.

MORAL
The moral of the story, "Bringing up Kari",
is that we should underestimate nature in a
way that animals can exceed the doings of a
human being.

• In simple words, the story depicts


the moral that animals too have the ability
of sometimes being more caring and loving
than human beings.
• This story is about a nine year old boy and five
months old elephant, Kari. Both of them grew
together. The first thing which Kari did was to
save a boy. Kari was like a baby and full of
mischief.
SUMMARY

• One day he developed the taste of bananas and since


then he took all steps to steal the bananas. The narrator
was very annoyed. So he scolded Kari for his mischief.
The narrator took all efforts to teach elephant to walk
and to sit down.
