INTRODUCED TO :
What is the pump?
Pumps are machines
which supply energy to
liquid in order to move it
from place to another.
Pumps push on a
hydraulic fluid and create
Pumps enable liquid to
1.Flow from a region or a low
pressure to one of high
pressure.
2. Flow from a low level to a
higher level.
3. Flow at a faster rate.
TYPES OF HYDRAULIC
PUMPS
Hydraulic
Pumps

Positive
Rotodynamic Pumps
Displacement Pumps
1. Rotodynamic Pumps
These pumps characterized by:

1. Smooth continuous flow.

2. The output flow reduced as the

circuit resistance increased.

2. The output flow reduced as the circuit
resistance increased.

3. Is not self priming, due to the clearance

space between the impeller and the

housing
4. It is typically used in low pressure high
volume flow applications.

5. Due to the output flow changes with external

resistance so they are rarely used in hydraulic

systems.
Centrifugal pump
Centrifugal pumps are a rotodynamic
pump work-absorbing turbomachinery.
TYPES OF
CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS
1. According to the type of casing
Volute casing
Vortex casing
Diffuser casing
2. According to the number of stages
Single stage
Multi stage
3. According to the types of impellers
Single suction impeller
Double suction impeller
4. According to the shape of the
vanes (blades) of the impelle
Radial flow impeller
Axial flow impeller
Mixed flow impelle
MAIN PARTS OF A
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
The following are the main parts of a centrifugal
pump:
1. Impeller
2. Casing
3. Suction pipe with a foot valve and a strainer
4. Delivery pipe
MAIN PARTS OF A
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Impeller: The rotating part of a centrifugal
pump is called ‘impeller’.
MAIN PARTS OF A CENTRIFUGAL
PUMP
Casing: The casing of a centrifugal pump is
similar to the casing of a reaction turbine.
MAIN PARTS OF A
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Suction Pipe with a foot-valve and a
strainer: Suction pipe is connected at its upper
end to the inlet of the pump at the center of the
impeller, at the suction eye of the Impeller
MAIN PARTS OF A
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Delivery Pipe: A pipe whose one end is
connected to the outlet of the pump and other end
delivers the water at a required height is known
as delivery pipe.
MAIN PARTS OF A
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Shaft: Shaft is coupled to motor. It transfers the
torque from motor to impeller.
MAIN PARTS OF A
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Stuffing Box: It is used to stop leakage of air into
the casing when the pressure in the casing is below
atmospheric. It also stops the leakage of liquid
under pressure from the casing of the pump.
2. Positive displacement
pumps (hydrostatic)
This type of pumps ejects a fixed amount
of fluid per revolution of the pump shaft.
2. Positive displacement pumps
(hydrostatic)

Reciprocating Pumps

Gear pumps Vane pumps Piston pumps

Positive displacement pumps have the following
advantage over the non positive displacement pumps

High pressure capability ( up to 10000 psi.).

Capable to over comes the pressure resulting

from mechanical loads and resistance to flow

due to friction.
Reciprocating pumps
Reciprocating pump converts the

mechanical energy into pressure energy by

sucking the liquid into a cylinder, in which a
piston is reciprocating.
TYPES OF
RECIPROCATING PUMPS
The reciprocating pumps may be classified as:

1. According to the contact of liquid with one side or

both sides of the piston
 Single acting reciprocating pump
 Double acting reciprocating pump
TYPES OF RECIPROCATING PUMPS
2. According to the number of cylinders
 Single cylinder reciprocating pump
 Double cylinder reciprocating pump
MAIN PARTS OF A
RECIPROCATING PUMPS
The followings are the main parts of a reciprocating
pumps:
Cylinder, piston, piston rod, connecting rod and
crank suction pipe,
Suction pipe and suction valve
Delivery pipe and delivery valve
MAIN PARTS OF A
RECIPROCATING PUMPS
Cylinder, piston, piston rod, connecting
rod and crank: A single acting reciprocating
pump, which consists of a piston which moves
forwards and backwards in a close fitting
cylinder.
MAIN PARTS OF A
RECIPROCATING PUMPS
Suction pipe and suction valve: Suction pipe
is connected to the cylinder. Suction valve is one
way valve, i.e., a non return valve.
MAIN PARTS OF A
RECIPROCATING PUMPS
Delivery pipe and delivery valve: Delivery
pipe is connected to the cylinder.
Vane Pumps
A rotary vane pump is a positive-
displacement pump that consists of vanes
mounted to a rotor that rotates inside of a
cavity.
Piston Pumps
A piston pump is a type of positive
displacement pump where the high-
pressure seal reciprocates with the
piston.
Gear
 A gear pump uses pumpsof gears to
the meshing
pump fluid by displacement. They are one
of the most common types of pumps
for hydraulic fluid power applications.
