INTRODUCTION TO
MY PLAN

This plan will…

Set the standard for leadership. Balance that with your own
leadership style and traits, this plan will help you develop and
grown! Assess your strengths and weaknesses to grow into the
leader you know you can be.

WEEK 1: FIND
YOUR PURPOSE
Kouzes and Posner quote 1

“All of us are born leaders. We all have leadership qualities

ingrained. All that we need is polishing them up and
bringing them to the forefront. (Kouzes and Posner 2017,
p. 12)

* Are leaders born or taught? If we are all born leaders, why

must we all be taught and we cannot all be leaders, there must
be followers. But to be a good leader you must first be a good
follower. The world of leadership is a divine paradox we seek
to concur!

* Leaderships is not about solving the paradox it is about self-

development and how YOU can be better. How are YOU
going to polish up?
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR PURPOSE
(CONT’D)
Assess your
personality type.
How do you conduct
Kouzes and Posner quote 2: yourself (regardless
of your position) are
Model the Way Titles are granted, but it’s your behavior you a leader?
that earns you respect.
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 13)

* Too many of us fall into the trap “If I was the boss, I
would do this, If only I had X or Y then things would be so
much better around here”. This simply isn’t true; everyone
can influence their own environment. The energy and
behavior you carry to conduct yourself can be infectious to
the group! Use this power for good, rather than evil!
WEEK 1: FIND YOUR PURPOSE (CONT’D)

” Deeds are far more important than

words when constituents want to
determine how serious leaders really
are about what they say. Words and
deeds must be consistent.” (Kouzes and
Posner 2017, p. 14)

* Failing to keep your word will cause your team to lose

faith in their leader. Constituents will even challenge your
authority and push the boundaries of their role. Further
hurting your team's faith in you.
TO DO today (that is, in the FUTURE when you
are using your 12 Week Project):
1. Recognize ______________
2. Write Thank-You note to _______.

WEEK 2: LEARNING IS DOING (CONT’D)
Kouzes and Posner quote 6

“If a leader displays no passion for a cause, why should anyone else? Furthermore,
being upbeat, positive, and optimistic offers people hope that the future can be
brighter.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 36)

* No one wants to work for gloomy, depressing person. No one wants to work in that
environment. Remember, the vibe you put out has an influence on the group! Leader
from the front, lead by example.

WEEK 2: LEARNING IS
DOING
• Kouzes and Posner quote 7:

“People expect leaders to have a sense of direction and a concern for

the future of the organization. Simply put, says first-year attorney
Sarah Holden: “If leaders want to rely on others to follow them, the
leader needs to tell them where they are going, and get everyone
heading in the same direction.”
(Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 37)

* Using foresight proves you are planning ahead, looking out for everyone,
and comes with experience. If in uncharted territory this is an opportunity to
prove to your team your knowledge and whit you have earned through
experience. SHOW THEM WHY YOU’RE A LEADER!

WEEK 1 AND WEEK 2
“WRAP-UP”:
What have we learned? Are you not entertained?

Focus on the theme of leadership. What have we learned? Think of Alex or

Matt Mendez, what makes them such good leaders? Well, first they are
competent. They have a solid foundation of skill for us to trust their
judgement. Why do we trust their judgement and decisions? They have
forward-thinking, their experience and skills give us confidence in their
decisions. They are honest and inspiring; Alex is the master of giving us
bad news but rallying us up to tackle it head on! He leads by example with
this commitment and passion for our mission. They trust in us and are
happy to give us credit and praise. Their title was not only granted but
earned through their behavior and respect!
WEEK 3:
MODEL THE WAY
• Kouzes and Posner quote 9:

“Before you can become a credible leader – one who
connects “what you say” with “what you do” – you first
have to find your authentic voice, the most genuine
expression of who you are. If you don’t find your voice,
you’ll end up with a vocabulary that belongs to someone
else, mouthing words written by some speechwriter or
mimicking the language of some other leaders who is
nothing like you at all.”
Add’l Quote 1 (from the Odyssey synopsis):
• (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 49)
“Yet Odysseus is too proud. His hubris is his

pg. 6).
WEEK 3: MODEL THE WAY (CONT’D)
• Kouzes and Posner quote 10(from this module’s assigned
readings):

“To speak out, however, you have to have

something to speak about. To stand up for
your beliefs you stand for. To walk the
talk, you have to have a talk to walk. TO
do what you say, you have to know what
you want to say.

Add’l Quote 2:
• (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 48)

with your values and beliefs. It is not just their hair, but they did not mend matters by crying. …”
about what you ‘should believe in’ but
what is actually meaningful to you! (Odyssey 2018, pg. 15).
WEEK 3: MODEL THE WAY (CONT’D)
• Kouzes and Posner quote 11:

“Exemplary leaders understand and
are attentive to language because they
appreciate the power of words.”
• (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 79)

Learn the power carry words and

TRIUMVIRATE (CO-MENTORING
TEAM) QUOTES & REFLECTIONS:

“He had such little concern for the people on his team that he was actually
willing to sacrifice them” (Kaitlyn, 15:21)

When discussing Odysseus’ leadership traits Kaitlyn brought this us to

consider. As a leader you should lead from the front, set the example, show
wisdom and foresight so others will follow.

Throughout Odysseus’ adventures he continuously leads his mean to death

or peculiar situations, is that a good example of a leader? Is he setting his
team up for safety and success? Does the danger out weight the ‘pushing the
limits and confidences a leader should also exhibit?

WEEK 4: BE THE FIRST TO TRUST (BUT VERIFY…)

* As a leader you are setting the example for your team. You are

LEADING them to follow in your path. Guide them to
demonstrate the values you hold and hold everyone to do the
same.
WEEK 4: BE THE FIRST TO TRUST
(BUT VERIFY…) (CONT’D)
• Kouzes and Posner quote 14:
“No one will believe you’re serious until they see you doing what you’re asking
of others. Either you lead by example or you don’t lead at all. This is how you
provide the evidence that you’re personally committed. It’s how you make your
values tangible. (Kouzes and Posner 2017, pg. 72)

* Lead by example or don’t lead at all! That is why you follow what you preach. If you don’t it proves
you don’t believe in what you said. If you don’t believe in it why should anyone else? Speak freely but
tactfully, remember what you say and be prepared to stand by that.

TO DO today (that is, in the FUTURE when you

are using your 12 Week Project):
1. Recognize your strengths and weakness
2. Write Thank-You note to YOUR MOTHER!
This Photo by Unknown Author is
licensed under CC BY-ND
(Or any other mentors who taught you something
recently!)
WEEK 4: BE THE FIRST TO
TRUST (BUT VERIFY…)
(CONT’D)

Add’l Quote 4:
“Even someone as hardcore as Odysseus,
aint always in the driver seat! Sometimes
he’s behind the wheel, other times hes riding
bitch in the God’s whip” (Thug Notes
Odyssey, 3:13)

* You can only prepare for some much! So

prepare for the unexpected and roll with the
punches!
WEEK 3 AND WEEK 4 “WRAP-UP”:
Model the Way! Think about how your actions and word affect your leadership. Learn your own voice and style. Don’t strive to be a
cheap imitation of someone successful, be better than them in your own way! You can do this by setting the example and listening to
feed back. Have some humility and learn from the mistakes and the victories. Represent the values of yourself, listen to yourself so
you can easily define those values! If you don’t know what your ‘standing for’ your will surly fall.

Think about what is important to you. Why is that important? How far are you willing to go to stick by that? Finding and defining
something that important will resonate with your team and they will follow you anywhere, even to their death like Odysseus’ men!
(okay will maybe not that far, but maybe!)

A. One of my favorite quotes is from the Thug Notes video. No matter powerful or witty Odysseus was in the story, he still could
not win everything. He wasn’t perfect but he was persistent! Where would he be if he just gave up? That story would SUCK!
B. “Even someone as hardcore as Odysseus, ain’t always in the driver seat! Sometimes he’s behind the wheel, other times he’s
riding bitch in the god’s whip.” (Thug Notes Odyssey, 3:13)

C. After every experience, GOOD OR BAD, think about what you can learn from them. You know learning things the hard way is
a way of life and everyone faces it! You are not facing something someone else hasn’t over come. Don’t let that suck you into
the black hole, turn it into something powerful that drives you!
WEEK 5: INSPIRE AND CREATE VISION

one that benefits others and not just yourself—has a Add’l Quote 5, on Capt. Cook:

WEEK 5 AND WEEK 6 “WRAP-UP”:

After working on the TWO WEEKS for THIS THIRD MODULE, write two to three detailed
paragraphs to your “Future Self,” reflecting on the following:
A. What are the main themes or topics that I covered in these two weeks of my 12-Week plan---and how
do they reflect on leadership?

B. Within these paragraphs, what two or three quotes (from the preceding slides in this module) resonate
with me the most? (Repeat those quotes on this page, or at least include excerpts from them if they are long.)

C. What are some personal or professional experiences, memories, or related examples---details from
my own life---which connect with these themes? (Remember, this is a plan for the “Future You”---so make this
personal.)
Module 4 Instructions
(for Week 7 & Week 8 of the 12 Week Plan)

1. Build on your work from previous modules, using all the slides you have created

so far. Revise material, especially as per the instructor’s previous feedback.

2. Delete “Old Yeller” instructions---and any classic films about sweet dogs--and
check lists from those previous modules.
3. Insert quotes and illustrations as well as commentary as noted on the following
slides, but get creative.
4. Add material. Make this your own! Use more slides if you wish.

-- Also add your own commentary on each slide, whenever you add quotes or media.
-- Allow PLENTY of time. Make sure you do your best work.

-- Since this is a cumulative assignment, keep showing ALL YOUR PREVIOUS Ppt work within
your updated presentation. (But delete any of the prof.’s old instructions and old check lists from

WEEK 9 AND WEEK 10 “WRAP-UP”:
After working on the TWO WEEKS for THIS FIFTH MODULE, write two to three
detailed paragraphs to your “Future Self,” reflecting on the following:
A. What are the main themes or topics that I covered in these two weeks of my 12-Week
plan---and how do they reflect on leadership?

B. Within these paragraphs, what two or three quotes (from the preceding slides in this
module) resonate with me the most? (Repeat those quotes on this page, or at least include
excerpts from them if they are long.)

C. What are some personal or professional experiences, memories, or related examples---

details from my own life---which connect with these themes? (Remember, this is a plan for
the “Future You”---so make this personal.)
Instructions for MODULE 6
(Week 11 & Week 12)
--- Insert quotes and media on each slide.
--- Add annotations / commentary to explain all your quotes, media, and other elements.
--- Make sure you have “Interactive elements” well represented in each “Week” of your 12 Weeks,
such as “To-Do Lists” and reminders for action.

--- Insert “360-Degree Qualitative” questions as per the prof’s instructions as well as other questions
re. assessment of leadership effectiveness.

--- See the Module 6 AND Module 7 assignments, for final lists of requirements.

QUOTES & REFLECTIONS:
(Include at least one FAVORITE QUOTE from your co-mentors / triumvirate co-leaders
in your meeting. E.g., quote something they said in an email or in person, during your
Zoom/Skype meeting. This quote will be in their own words---it’s not a quote OF a quote
(it’s their ‘wit and wisdom’ you want).

Then explain the context and/or what this quote means to you. Why are you including it
here? How does it fit with themes of leadership?

(Remember that you will have a recording of your meeting each week, so you should never
“stop” your team’s conversation to write down a quote. And if you happen to miss a weekly
meeting---shame! (I know, right?)---you should still reach out to your team and ask for their
recording, to learn from them and to quote them.)
