What is Tessellation?
Tessellation are simply tiling patterns. Each
tessellation is made with one shape which
is know as the unit shape. A tessellation
is like a puzzle that repeats a particular pattern.

What is Tessellation?

• The word “tessellation” comes from the Latin word


“tessera”
which means “small stone cube”

• Another word for tessallation is “tilling”

• Most famous creator of
tessellation
• Born in Holland in 1898 (died
in 1972)
• Originally studied architecture
before becoming interested in
woodcuts and printmaking
• Did 137 tessellation in his
lifetime.

• Historically, tessellations were used in
ancient Rome and in Islamic art such as in
the Moroccan architecture and decorative
geometric tilling of Alhambra palace.

• The earliest tessallations were found


in mosaic picture on floors in old
Roman buildings.

How are tessellations made?

• A tessellation is created
when a shape is repeated over
and over again covering a
plane without any gaps or
overlaps.

How do we apply tessellation?

• Tessellations can be found in many areas of life.


Art, architecture, hobbies, and many other areas hold
examples of tessellations found in our everyday
surroundings. Specific examples include oriental
carpets, quilts, origami, Islamic architecture, and the
are of M. C. Escher.

• Such tillings may be decorative

such as providing durable and

wall coverings.
