Electronic Commerce
• The cutting edge for business today is electronic
commerce (e-commerce).
• It is a modern business methodology that addresses the
needs of organizations, merchants, and consumers to cut
costs while improving the quality of goods and services

• It is associated with the buying and selling of information,
products, and services via computer networks today and in
the future via any one of the myriad of networks that make
up the Information Superhighway (I-way).
• Key element of e-commerce is information processing.
• All steps of commerce, except for production, distribution,
and delivery of physical goods, are forms of information
gathering, processing, manipulation, and distribution, which
computers and networks are perfectly suited to handle.

form of business transactions, for which several
broad categories can be observed:

Overview of Electronic Commerce Framework

• From the business activity already taking place, it is

clear that e-commerce applications will be built on the
existing technology infrastructure-a myriad of
computers, communications networks, and
communication software forming the nascent
Information Superhighway.
• Figure shows a variety of possible e-commerce
applications, including both inter organizational and
consumer-oriented examples.

• Any successful e-commerce will require the I-way
infrastructure in the same way that regular commerce needs.
