 Use of MS Excel in Statistics
• ARITHMETIC MEAN OR AVERAGE

Example: 5 12 15 20 15 24 0 24 30 10 16 18
 

 THE PROCESS IN EXCEL:


1. Encode the data in one or more column
2. Activate any vacant cell. Click fx, and select the category STATISTICAL then
click on AVERAGE
3. In the NUMBER 1 box, specify the input range of the data where you have
encoded the numbers (A1:A12). The mean will appear in the dialog box.

NOTE: You can also encode the following to any active vacant cell:

= AVERAGE (INPUT RANGE)

Example 1: When the number of observation is ODD, let say n = 9
 Find the median of : 13 43 23 20 51 64 49 80 55
 Arrange the data in ascending or descending order: 13 20 23
43 49 51 55 64 80
Example 2: When the number of observation is EVEN, let say n = 10
 Find the median of : 34 56 89 42 26 14 28 98 56 78
 Arrange the data in ascending or descending order: 14 26 28
34 42 56 56 78 89 98
 THE PROCESS IN EXCEL:
1. Encode the data in one or more columns
2. Activate any vacant cell. Click fx, and select the category STATISTICAL then click on
MEDIAN
3. In the NUMBER 1 box, specify the input range of the data where you have encoded the
numbers (A1:A9). The median will appear in the dialog box.

 Simply the answer is 3
Example 2: Find the mode of the following scores: 0 0 0 0 2 4 3 4 4 4 9 7 8 5
 Simply the answer are 0 and 4
