Weighted mean

(using Likert Scale)

What is Average weighted mean?
Who invented Likert Scale?
The debate about the midpoint
What research has shown about why
respondent chose the mid-point.
• Respondents may be unmotivated to
make an effort to choose anything else.
• Respondent may be ambivalent.
• Respondent may be reluctant to voice a
socially undesirable response.

Base on these findings, some researchers

advocate eliminating the midpoint or adding
more items to the scale.
Likert Scale
• A likert-type question (or “item”) asks respondents
to select one of several (usually four or five)
responses that are ranked in order of strength.
Here’s an example:
• Indicate what you think about the following
statements using the scale below:
(1) Strongly agree; (2) Agree; (3) Neither
agree or disagree; (4) Disagree; (5)
Strongly Disagree

Weighted mean formula
How to use this formula
Food factors Rating Scale Overall
4 3 2 1 WM DE

Nutritional Health benefits of food offer 10 0 0 0 4.00

Menu offered 6 4 0 0 3.60
Varieties of products to choose from 7 3 0 0 3.70
Quality of food offered 6 4 0 0 3.60
Authenticity of food offer depicting the country 6 4 0 0 3.60
they introduce in the business
OVERALL WEIGHTED MEAN RATING 3.70

(4x10)+(0x3)+(0x2)+(0x1)=40/10=4.00 Rating Scale:

(4x6)+(3x4)+(0x2)+(0x1)=36/10=3.60 = highest range – lowest range ÷ highest range
(4x7)+(3x3)+(2x0)+(1x0)=37/10=3.70 = 4-1÷ 4
= 0.75
(4x6)+(3x4)+(0x2)+(0x1)=36/10=3.60
(4x6)+(3x4)+(0x2)+(0x1)=36/10=3.60

4.00+3.60+3.70+3.60+3.60=18.5/5=3.70

4 3.26-4.00 highly influenced
3 2.51-3.25 influenced
2 1.76-2.50 very least influenced
1 1.00-1.75 not influenced
