Background

 INDCO was a Fortune 500 manufacturing company

 Present in 50 countries with 80,000 employees
 Company supports personality development and trainings for their employees
 IndCo Management Development Center (IMDC) was developed to impart training to Indco employees
 They believed in 70:20:10 rule- on job, mentoring and classroom/e-learning based trainings
 All employees undergo at least 80 hours of training
 IMDC does trainings in house mostly- but in certain specialized cases they take help of external trainers as well

Case in Hand

Mineral Resources Division is a new unit which was headed by a long timer Gunjan Anand
Anand had selected around 15 people who are experts in mining but not so much in strategic vision
Anand wanted a customized training for these people in strategy formulation, thinking and planning
Anand approached IMDC who appointed Monika Mehta as the person responsible
Monika quickly understood that what Anand requires is not possible in house and external help is needed
She approached a Professor from XLRI with whom she and Anand spent time on discussing the training
Professor Pathak understood the requirements and created a structure for a 2 days training
He sent his proposal which Monika felt is way too high
Monika now needs to ensure that this wont go against the principle of IMDC, the budget would be approved and Anand
will like the training

4.What is your assessment of MRD's requirements? Based on the information available, do you think the
training program will meet MRD’s requirements?

Following Information Available :

 MRD is a new unit of IndCo.
 There are about 15 employees who are hand picked.
 All these employees are high on technical knowledgeable but need to develop strategic thinking.
 The 15 team members also need to work together as a virtual team more effectively , they do not meet often
as travelling most of the times.
 Learn scenario planning, understand the marketing dynamics and negotiations skills.
 Participants can enjoy and take home the skillsets required.

Prof Pathak has proposed the following:

1. There will be a set of 8-10 strategic key questions which would be deliberated upon by the participants
2. A pre-read pack shall be provided so for the participants to be ready
3. There will be 8 sessions of 90 minutes where these will be discussed and there would be a final
presentation based on above
4. There will be a game-based methodology on legos as well to keep the participants interested.
CONCLUSION : Looking at the above and the outcomes proposed, this training session should meet the objectives
and requirements of MRD for the following:

1. This will generate strategic thinking

2. The participants will think on their feet to bring out solutions
3. They will learn various strategic tools and relevant strategic frameworks that are customized as per Gunjan’s
Requirements.
4. This will ensure MRD knows the business environment and works accordingly
5. They will also finish the annual planning for the department
