IS MATTER AROUND US PURE

CHAPTER- 2
CLASS - IX
SUBJECT - SCIENCE (CHEMISTRY)
Pure substances can be divided into two types
a) Elements
b) Compounds
Element
It is a substance which is made up of
only one kind of atom
Eg: Gold, silver, calcium, Hydrogen
Element is a basic form of
matter which cannot be broken
down into simpler substances by
chemical reaction
Each student will be asked to collect the following samples from kitchen - crystals of salt - 1 spoon of wheat flour -
Few drops of milk - water - small piece of paper and a torch light
After adding each of the sample in water
Q1. In which of the samples in water are the particles in the mixture visible? After taking a small piece of paper with a
black dot on it
Q2. In which of the samples in water are you able to clearly see through the black dot? After directing the torch light
towards the three solutions
Q3. In which of the samples in water are you able to clearly see the path of the light? Keeping the samples undisturbed
for sometime
Q4. In which of the samples in water are you able to clearly see the particles settling down after sometime? After
carrying out this activity students will be able to classify and differentiate the mixtures as solution, suspension and
colloidal solution.
SUSPENSION
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which solute particles do not dissolve but
remain suspended throughout the bulk of the medium.
Properties of a suspension

1. It is a heterogeneous mixture
2. The particles of suspension can be seen by the naked eye.
3. The particles of suspension scatter a beam of light passing through it.
4. The solute particles settle down when a suspension is left undisturbed. So it is
unstable
