Measuring Instruments

Some examples of physical quantities are length, time, mass,

temperature, weight, current and etc.

In the study of Physics, it is essential to obtain accurate and

reliable measurements. To do that, we will need to use the
right measuring instrument.

LO: Measure length and time using appropriate measuring
instruments

Must – Measure lengths using a ruler and measuring

tape
Should – Use Vernier calipers and micrometers to
measure short lengths
Could – Measure time using a stopwatch
Length

Length is the distance between two points.

It is measured using measuring instruments such
metre rule and _________________.
as a __________ measuring tape

Units for length include:

Metre, kilometres, feet, miles, etc
Task ( to be done later as HW)

Measuring short lengths

A metre rule and measuring tape are useful

measuring instruments to measure lengths. However,
we are not able to accurately measure short lengths,
such as the diameter of a pen and thickness of
paper with them.
We need instruments with greater sensitivity.
Vernier caliper

A vernier caliper is used to measure short lengths such

as internal diameter of a test tube.
 The smallest length that the vernier caliper can measure
is 0.1 mm (or 0.01cm)
Example:

Main scale reading Vernier scale reading Final reading

= 1.9 cm = 0.03 cm = (1.9 + 0.03) cm
= 1.93 cm

Micrometer

A micrometer is used to measure lengths of small

objects such as the diameter of human hair
 The smallest length that the micrometer can
measure is 0.01 mm (or 0.001 cm)
Example: Main scale reading
= 9.5 mm

Vernier scale reading

= 0.18 mm

Final reading
= (9.5 + 0.18) mm
= 9.68 mm

Time

Time is measured using a stopwatch.

Eg: Time taken to complete a race

A digital stopwatch measures up to 0.01 s.

How to measure period of oscillation?
 One oscillation of a pendulum is the
back-and-forth motion of a pendulum.
 The time taken for one oscillation is
known as its period (T), and is measured
in seconds.
Home Experiment

To determine the period of 1 oscillation:

 Determine the time taken to make a number of complete
oscillations (eg: 10 or 20)
 Divide this time by the number of complete oscillations.
Home Experiment - Challenge

Aim: To investigate how period of a pendulum affected by length of

the string.
IV – Length of string
DV – Period of oscillation
CV - Mass of bob, release angle, height of release
