The Earth and Earth

System
What word/words can you
associate with the planet Earth?

What makes our planet Earth

unique?
What makes our planet the only Living planet in the Solar
System?
Others think that life is a property of Earth; that the
processes of our planet tended towards life; hence,
life is native to Earth, not imported.
Our planet has a life-supporting capacity.
What are these factors?
1.Right distance to the Sun
 The Earth is neither too close nor
too far from the Sun.
 it is just of the right distance for
water, indispensable inorganic
substance for life, to exist in three
physical forms: liquid, solid and gas.
 If the Earth were too close, the
water would vaporize and useless to
life.
 If the Earth were too far, water
would be rock hard to be of any use to
living things.
In its liquid form, it supports
life either as habitat or as a
very component of the cells
where water acts as a
medium of biochemical
reactions.
 Earth is so called
Goldilocks’s zone from the
Sun because it is balance
for the living things
2. The presence of an
atmosphere
 The presence of
atmosphere makes life
possible.
 The ozone layer protects the
living things from Ultra Violet
from the Sun.
 C02 and other greenhouse
gases helps retains the heat
inside the Earth.
3. Right amount of Gravity
 Earth’s gravity is a decisive
factor of life’s existence
 If the gravity is weaker, the
atmosphere would have
easily leaked into outer
space.
 If it were stronger, the
planets would be probably
attracting meteors.
4. The presence of a
magnetosphere
 Without magnetic field,
the atmosphere and the
surface of the planet
would constantly be
bombarded with solar wind
and cosmic particles.
 It renders the particles
from the Sunless harmful.
5. The presence of
molecular oxygen
Without oxygen life on
Earth is impossible.
It supports respiration.
It is a constant
requirement of living
things
6. The Presence of
liquid water
Water is essential to
life
As site of biochemical
reactions, as raw
materials for
photosynthesis, as a
component of cells.
7. Energy from lightning
Lightning provided the
energy for the formation
biomolecules from
simple inorganic and
organic compounds
(water, methane,
ammonia, hydrogen gas)
SUBSYTEM OF THE
EARTH
1.Geosphere- it is the solid portion of the
Earth
2.Hydrosphere – the liquid part composed
mainly of water.
3.Atmosphere – the gaseous envelope or
covering of the planet
4.Biosphere – the living sphere or domain
where living things can exist. It includes the
portion of the other sphere
THE INTERNAL

THE EARTH
STRUCTURE OF
1. Crust- thin, outermost layer of the Earth.
2. Mantle – middle layer of the Earth
3. Core – innermost layer of the Earth; outer
core is in a liquid state whereas inner core is
in solid state
4. Since the Earth is rotating, the liquid outer
core is also spinning, and this generate the
Earth’s magnetic field.
5. Moho – boundary separating the crust and
mantle.
TYPES OF
ROCKS
1. Igneous Rocks
- Rocks of magmatic origin with
either coarse grains (due to rapid
cooling at or near the surface) or
fine grains (due to slow cooling
below the surface)
Process of formation – cooling
and solidification of melted rocks
(magma or lava) either at or near
the surface or at a thousand of
feet below the surface.
Examples - granite, basalt,
obsidian, andesite, porphyry,
diorite, etc.
2. Sedimentary Rocks
- Rocks formed from the
sedimentation and compaction
of particles from other rocks:
usually layered: can contain
fossils of ancient organisms.
Process of formation -
compaction of accumulated
sediments and fragments of
minerals, rocks, plants and
animal matter
Examples: sandstone,
shale and conglomerate
3. Metamorphic Rocks
- Rocks formed from other types
of rocks that have been
subjected to intense
temperature and pressure
through millions of years.
Process of formation –
Transformation of other
rocks into denser, small
rocks; formation of new
minerals from previous ones.
Examples: Granite gneiss,
biotite schist
Activity #1

1.There are already thousands of extra solar

planets discovered so far. If you were to search
for one that is Earth-like, what characteristics
should the planet have?

2. What would be the consequences if the Earth’s
outer core were to stop spinning?
