INTRODUCTION

An online web based students automated grade point average calculator. is a software or system that collects (accepts) as input
student’s bio-data and course examination scores, processes and stores them and then gives room for effective retrieval of these
information at any given point in time and location online; and this is done with the aid of the computer. It offers a
computerised approach to the way and manner students results are computed by our modern day institutions of higher learning
with a bid to reducing the massive inconsistency and redundancy that is associated with the manual system and to ensure that
there is a globalize access to such information when needed. Students’ examination records are computed and stored in an
online database. Students whether graduating or graduated can access these results online having met some criteria like signing
up with the school’s online database with a valid user identification number and password and meeting some school’s
requirements such as payment of school fees and other vital fees. Grade Point is a mark (score) awarded to a student which
indicate his/her total performance in a course examination per semester. At the end of every semester, students’
Continuous Assessment and examination scores are added up for the total number of courses offered by the respective
department(s) and will be divided by the total credit course loads for the semester to obtain the overall Grade Point of the
respective student(s) for the semester.
Most Nigerian tertiary institutions have joined their counterparts all over the world to implement the
technologized online result system and automation of their entire procedures to bring their institutions closer to
the watching eyes of the world via internet and to ease the hurdles of manual result compilation process bringing
to bare a more efficient and reliable approach to students’ result management. Computer is the only tool through
which this dream can be achieved as it has proven its ingenuity in all life endeavours by transforming approaches
in handling procedures in our work places, industries and individual lives. Since its advent, it has introduced
great many revolutions including Internet and Information Technology (IT) thus making the world a small global
village. An efficient online Students’ Grade Point Calculator has numerous benefits as it ensures efficient and
accurate documentation and management of institutions examination records, slashing costs and reducing the rate
of loss experienced while using the manual system. This research work is primarily aimed at developing a
software they would capture and synthesize students’ Grade Point and to assist management, staff and students of
Federal College of Agriculture (Fcai) carryout their exercise easily and more accurately and also provide for easy
management and documentation for administrative motives.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The errors associated with the existing manual method of processing of students results in most universities in
Nigeria, including Federal College of Agriculture, make it not only desirable but imperative that computerized
approach be used to the full in measuring students’ progress. The manual methods being employed suffer a
number of set-backs. They make the process to be time-consuming and prone to error. They lead to examination
results being published late, sometimes with wrong grades being entered and students’ grade point averages
being wrongly computed as a result, and ultimately leading to wrong conclusions being arrived at on class
of degree awarded. Some students could end up with undeserved good class of degree, while others could be
unfairly victimized, bringing about frustration and bad blood. The Departments concerned, and the whole
University and College could become tarnished. The problem, therefore, that arises is to find a method of
processing examination results that would be sufficiently accurate and reasonably timely. The software application
in this research work is intended to bring relieve by providing for timely and accurate processing of students
results using the processing power of the computer. Historically, result computation and students data record
management in computer science department in the Institute of management and technology in Federal College of
Agriculture has been affected by several factors based on the current manual processing method used such as:
1. Loss of vital information relating to student result/ records

2. The time and labour involved in the student result computation of CGPA

3. Files and records not properly kept.

4. Miscalculation of students CGPA after graduation.

5. Difficulties involved in searching for a specified record

6. Wrong transcription and mutilations by accident or on purpose

7. Information is much insured and can be accessed by the wrong persons.


METHODOLOGY
FACT FINDING METHODS USED:
The fact-finding methods used during the analysis of the existing system are:
(i) INTERVIEW METHOD
A lot of staff we be interviewed among whom where the HOD computer science and some
staff and lecturers.
(ii) DIRECT OBSERVATION
This method is necessary in order to gather reliable information of how the student result is
being graded presently. The staffs that will involve in the result computation will be observed on
one of the occasion during the research.
(iii) DOCUMENT REVIEW
The term document refers to paper or which data has been recorded which include pre-
printed result. The document were collected from examination officer. The existing documents that
serve as input to the manual system and those that are generated as output from the system were
also studied, also procedure manuals, operations manuals and job specification.
IMPORTANCE / BENEFIT TO THE SOCIETY
1. This great online tool is very easy to use and you don’t have to be a math genius or a computer wizard to make
calculations. All you have to do is to enter the data from your transcript and every computer user can easily cope
with this task.
2. You don’t have to spend many hours to do calculations — the calculator will do it in no time. This tool is
actually a computing program that can process data about your grades very fast.
3. You will get an exact result and avoid possible mistakes. When you do the calculations manually, you may make
a tiny mistake but it can lead to a wrong result and the time you spend doing calculations can be wasted.
4. Knowing your grade point average, you will be able to take measures to boost your college performance and
improve your final result.
5. GPA is an important factor for college admissions and for job applications.
6. Having a high GPA will increase your chances of getting into a college of your choice and landing a job of your
dream.
7. GPA will determine your chances to get academic or athletic college scholarships, and it is considered when you
apply for financial aid.
ADVANTAGES OF THE CGPA CALCULATOR

 Determination of Weakness and Strengths: With the help of the grades the weaknesses and strength of
the students will be identified and they will work on the weakness and turn the weakness into the
strengths. Also, they will polish their strengths and take it to next level.

 Low Score Pressure: The grading system lower the pressure of getting high marks as the students
because in the grading system the actual marks obtained by the student are not written on the report
cards so that they don’t have to target for good marks, their main target is to achieve good grades.

 The pattern of Grading: It relies upon the advanced pattern, as grades are not given according to the
academics only; other things are also considered while making the decision like achievements,
assignments, attendance etcetera. Students can perform a little in all modules for getting good grade
instead of getting good marks only by performing well in academics.
CONCLUSSION

 
This work was initiated due to the inadequacies of the existing system such as bordness and
delay encountered in computing student results. The new system looked into these inadequacies and
attempted successfully to eliminate these problems. The new system employed the use of interactive
mode to design a system that can Compute the scores and output the results of both the individual
and all the student’s results.
In this regard, the software can be of much value in terms of efficiency and monetary aspect
because if when maximum utilized, can reduce the manual work of computing the student’s results
for educational purpose.
