• Involve the mathematical properties of structural shapes
• Are based solely on the shape of the section • Examples: • Centroidal distance & center of gravity • Section area • Moment of Inertia • Section modulus • Radius of gyration Center of Gravity
• A body is composed of an infinite number of particles of differential
sizes, & so if the body is located within a gravitational field, then each of these particles will have a weight dW • These weight will form an approximately parallel force system, & the resultant of this system is the total weight of the body w/c passes a single point called the center of gravity. AREAS 1.Calculations of Areas. To calculate the area bounded by the coordinate axes and a curve, or set of intersecting curves, the procedure outlined below is suggested: a. Make sketch of the area to be determined. b. Draw a general vertical or horizontal rectangular element of area and express its area of and dx (or y and dy). c. Determine the limits of integration from the figure and integrate to obtain the area. d. Make a rough check of the result by estimating the area graphically.
The formulas required are:
A= or A = Centroid of an Area Determine the area of the cross-section as shown in figure below.
