Manual tool

Autor: Tito Carlos Mamani Cancari

DEFINITION
• Manual tools are work utensils, generally made of steel, wood, fiber, plastic or rubber,
which are normally used individually, and only require human motive power to operate.

• They can also be defined as the basic equipment of work tools for a workshop or
professional mechanic.

• They are used to carry out construction or repair tasks in a myriad of work activities.

• Accidents caused by hand tools constitute a large part of the total number of accidents
at work, and in particular those of a minor nature. Most of the time they are due to
recklessness and misuse by the worker.
TYPES
• Among the basic tools I mention some of the most common:

• Cutting tools: Hand saw, file, drill bit, scissors, chisel, shear, pliers.
• Clamping tools: Pliers, vise.
• Fixing tools: Wrench, screwdriver, riveter.
• Auxiliary tools of various uses: Hammer, cylindrical punch, hoist,
gramil, compass, hydraulic jack.
RISKS
• Cuts and punctures.
• Entrapments
• Hits.
• Falls
• Particle projection.
• Explosion or fire (in explosive or flammable environments).
• Electrocution.
• Burns.
Preventive measures
• Inspect the parts of the tool daily before use (handle, moving and cutting parts, sharp edges ...)
• In case of observing any defect or anomaly, the higher command will be notified. If the tool is damaged, defective or damaged, it will be sent to
the maintenance service for repair or final disposal.
• The tools will be used only for the use for which they have been designed.
• In the case of an electric hand tool, it will not work without a plug, and the worker will be provided with the personal protective equipment that is
adapted to this type of work.
• When changing the tool, the worker will disconnect the tool and check that it is stopped.
• They must have sufficient and adequate training for the work to be carried out and the use of the tool.
• Follow the instructions in the manufacturer's instructions manual.
• The tools will be purchased from companies of recognized quality and ergonomic design.
• Workers must follow a training plan in the correct use of each tool to be used, in which they will be specialized.
• Use the right tool for each type of operation.
• Use the appropriate auxiliary elements or accessories that each operation requires, to carry it out in the best safety conditions.
• Its storage will be orderly, on shelves with panel installation or other systems. At the beginning of the day it will be collected from the shelf, and at
the end it will be returned to its storage place.
• The repair, sharpening, tempering or any other similar operation must be carried out by specialized personnel, avoiding in any case making
temporary repairs.
• The transport of tools must be carried out in boxes, bags or tool belts specially designed for it.
• Tools should not be carried in pockets, whether they are sharp or sharp or not.
• When climbing stairs or carrying out ascending or descending maneuvers, the tools shall be carried so that the hands are free.
