Sports Council for Wales
What they do:

• The People & Programme team are responsible for

managing the training and development of all our
programmes.

• Their work covers the full range of sports participants from

young people through to adults. These are the only two types
of ages that the sports council for Wales focuses on.

Active Young people
• Active kids become active adults. The programmes that are offered engage with
young people making sure that they have the skills and confidence to become active
throughout their lives.

There are 3 main programmes to support Active Young People:

• Dragon Sport
• 5x60
• PE & School Sport

Dragon Sport
• Dragon Sport is a Sport Wales initiative funded by the National Lottery, designed to offer
7-11 year olds fun and enjoyable sporting opportunities.

• Dragon Sport is making a dramatic impact on sports participation by encouraging

children to become involved in a variety of organised sporting activities.

• The scheme broadens the interests of children who already participate in sport by offering
different varieties of sport and a lot of choices.

• Dragon Sport introduces children to coaching, skill development and appropriate

competition using versions of the adult game, modified to meet their needs and skill levels.
A portfolio of eight modified sports is used in the scheme. The eight Dragon Sports are
rugby, athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, tennis and golf.

5x60
• Aim - The Welsh Assembly Government has laid down the fitness gauntlet by setting the
target of seeing 90% of children taking part in regular and frequent activity by 2020. 5x60 is
rising to the challenge by helping to create the environment necessary for children to take part in
extra curricular sport and physical activity on a regular basis.

• What they do - Fully trained 5X60 officers are currently working in secondary schools to
extend the extra curricular programme for young sportsmen/women. A host of arranged activities
are taking place before school, at lunch time, after school and at the weekends.

• The Activities - There are many activities to choose from to suit everyone. There’s things
such as mountain biking, hill walking and surfing. Or there are the team sports such as football,
cricket and netball. 5x60 also provides activities such as street dancing, aerobics and table
tennis.
• 5x60 provides schools with the opportunity to listen to the needs of young
people by providing opportunities that they would like to participate in and be
fully inclusive for all young people.

P.E and School Sport
• The PE and School Sport (PESS) Project was set up in 2000 as a result of a task
force report outlining the key actions required to improve standards of PE .

Aims
The project aims to raise standards in physical education by making sure that all schools:

• Manage the subject effectively within the whole school curriculum.

• Set challenging targets for raising standards in physical education and school sport.
• Provide enough curriculum time to teach the requirements of the National Curriculum for physical
education in all key stages.
• Develop young people's physical skills from one year to the next and improve their understanding of
the importance of health and fitness.
• Raise standards in physical education and school sport by establishing accredited continuing
professional development (CPD) programmes for all teachers.
Active Adults
• People of all ages who are generally inactive can improve their health and
well-being by becoming active on a regular basis. And the benefits of doing
so are plenty.

The Active Adults programmes include:

• Let's Walk Cymru

• Free Swimming
• Mentro Allan

Let’s Walk Cymru
'Let's Walk Cymru' (LWC) is a Wales-wide walking programme tasked with increasing the
number of people using the great outdoors as a way of improving health and wellbeing of
the population.  The use of natural green space provides great opportunities for people to
participate in and enjoy walking.

The aims and objectives of this programme are to:

• Support existing and new walking groups and projects.

• Challenge organisations and groups to develop sustainable walking opportunities.
• Offer walking groups guidance in how to expand their menu of walking activities, by introducing more
progressive or challenging walks.
• Deliver health walk leader courses, signpost to other walk leader awards and provide insurance cover to
volunteer walk leaders.
• Engage with new target groups to increase the number of people benefitting from walking.

Free Swimming
Free swimming plays a key role in the Welsh Assembly Government's strategy to enable children and
adults to become more active.

• During selected sessions people aged 60 years and over are able to access swimming pools for
free in Wales.

• There are plenty of other water activities other than swimming laps you could try. There are
activities like walking or running in water and treading water which can be exhausting but it will
help tone your legs and arms.

• Many pools also offer a free activity with an Instructor each week. Below shows the activities that
are available:
- AquaFit session
- Learning to swim
- Stroke Improvement sessions;
- AquaGym workout.

Mentro Allan
• Mentro Allan is a collection of projects in Wales supported by the Big Lottery Fund and
a national partnership.

• The programme targets specific groups that are generally less active than the others.

• Each of the projects are funded for four years to increase the physical activity levels for
the target groups selected, making the best use of the local natural outdoor environment
close to where people live.

The England Performance Programme is centrally co-ordinated, designed,
managed and delivered by the ECB staff based at the National Cricket
Performance Centre at Loughborough.

Objectives of the ECB:

• To select players who have the potential of winning matches for England
• To provide each player with an individually tailored development programme
• To provide each player with a comprehensive and individually tailored sports
science and medicine programme
• To provide a challenging competitive programme which reflects a balance
between preparation, competition and rest
• To provide dedicated coaching and support staff whose common goal is
excellence both on and off the field
• To provide excellent facilities to deliver the programme

which delivers the programme
ECB Association of umpires
The ECB’s aim for this is to develop competent
umpires and scorers to control and guide cricket
matches at every level from a playground level to a
test match standard.

To achieve all this they operate as an independent association with

the wholehearted support of the ECB and have a small team of their
own executives in the main ECB office at Lord's; working through the
regions to each County board, so that the officials are supported and
represented by them and that each individual voice and views of the
officials can be expressed to the them.
