Our Theological

Guidelines/Quadrilater
al of Faith

GROUP 1
INDRODUCTION
Methodists traditionally use a fourfold approach to learn about our Christian faith and apply it to
contemporary issues and our Christian practice: These are the Scripture, Tradition, experience,
and reason.
We seek to discover the word of God through reading the Bible. There are different
understandings among Methodists about the Bible's authority in our lives. We need to use
resources like different Bible translations, commentaries and Bible reading notes. Tradition is the
wisdom and creativity of Christians over time and across the world. Reason means becoming
aware of different points of view, and using our own critical thinking to make sense of God's
world. Methodism particularly stresses the importance of our own experience of God's grace
working in our lives. We gain wisdom and maturity from life experience, especially when we pray
and reflect about our story with other Christians.

QUADRILATERAL OF
FAITH
This method based its
teaching on four sources as
the basis of theological and
doctrinal development. These
four sources are scripture,
tradition, reason, and
Christian experience.

TECHNOLOGICAL GUIDELINES
Our Theological Journey
When we think about and study our faith, we are doing theology. All of
us, both clergy and laity, are to participate in this work as part of the
Christian community.
To help us faithfully carry out this task, The United Methodist Church
identifies four helpful tools we call our theological guidelines. They are
Scripture, tradition, experience, and reason. Let’s look at each of these.

1.
SCRIPTURE/
BIBLE

Scripture, also called sacred scripture, the revered texts, or
Holy Writ, of the world’s religions. Scriptures comprise a large
part of the literature of the world. They vary greatly in form,
volume, age, and degree of sacredness, but their common
attribute is that their words are regarded by the devout as
sacred. Sacred words differ from ordinary words in that they
are believed either to possess and convey spiritual and magical
powers or to be the means through which a divine being or
other sacred reality is revealed in phrases and sentences full of
power and truth. 6
2.EXPERIENCE

7

◈ We are called to love God with our minds as
well as with our hearts. To the best of our
ability we need to think things through in the
light of reason. This means becoming aware
of different points of view, and using our own
critical thinking to make sense of God's world.

8
3.REASON

9

◈ While we acknowledge that much of our faith is beyond
reason, we believe that using our God-given gifts for
reason are a tool we are to bring to our faith. We do not
discount our thinking as we read the Bible, share the
Gospel, ask questions, and seek answers.

By reason we read and interpret scripture (Bible

6.TRADITION

◈ This is the wisdom and creativity of Christians
over time and across the world. It includes
inspirational material like hymns, songs, prayers,
poetry, Christian art and devotional books,. There
are also formally agreed teachings like the
creeds, the content of the catechism, and
statements and reports from the Methodist
Conference. 12
