EXTERIOR WALL FINISH

-A wall, bearing or nonbearing, that is used as an enclosing

wall for a building, other than a fire wall.

-Exterior walls are vertical elements of a building and give

shape to a home and defines the area of a building, provide
structural support and protect the home from outside elements.

- Exterior wall thickness varies depending on the exterior finish

,siding and brick facing.
Principal Requirements of a Wall

 Good thermal insulation

 Control air flow
 Control water vapor flow
 Control rain penetration
 Control light, solar and other radiation
 Good Sound Insulation
 Good Fire Resistance
 Provide Strength and Rigidity
 Durable
 Aesthetically pleasing
 Economical
Forms of Construction
 -Masonry (e.g. Brick Wall )

 - Monolithic (e.g. Concrete Wall )

 - Membrane (e.g. Sandwich)

 - Frame (e.g. Timber Stud )

Common Materials for Construction

Bricks Stones Concrete

Glass
Construction using Bricks

Mortar Bonds

Brick
wall

Pointing Jointing
Mortar
 - In most situation 1:4.5 (c : fine aggregate)

 - In very exposed situation like chimneys :

1:3 (c : fine aggregate)
Jointing and Pointing
 Jointing – carry out during the laying of bricks.
 Pointing – carry out after the brickwork is
completed.
Bonds
 - Purpose is to provide better distribution of
loading both horizontally and vertically.
Construction using Natural Stones
 - Construction is similar to brick or block wall
except for the bonding (variety will be more
limited).
 - Careful selection of suitable size and shape of
the stones will be required
Construction using Concrete
 - Most flexible in terms of thickness , layout
and desirable strength.
 -Monolithic in nature, hence better strength.
 - Formwork will be required.
 -Can be precast or cast in-situ.
Construction using Glass
 - Approximately 100mm thick.
 - Non-load bearing.
 -Maximum height of 6m.
 - Basically self-finished.
