Force &

Motion
What is force?
● Force is any push or pull
● Forces have a size and a
direction
20 N ● The size of a force is
measured in Newtons
Net Force
● The combination
of all the forces
Lift
acting on an
object is known
as net force.
Gravity
What is the combined force of
Forces Working Together
this team?

● When two forces are

20 N 30 N 50 N acting on the same object
in the same direction,
they combine, or they are
added together
Forces Working Against Each Other
● When two forces are acting on the same object in DIFFERENT directions, they
work against each other, or they are subtracted

What is the net force here?

Which direction is it in? 150 N
200 N
Which way will the rope move?
Balanced Forces
● When the combined forces acting on an object equal zero, the net force is said
to be balanced.
● This does not produce a change in motion for the object.

100 N 100 N
Lift
Unbalanced Forces 1000N

● When the combined forces acting on

an object equal anything but zero, Gravity
200N
the net force is said to be balanced.
● This does produce a change in
motion for the object.
So then what is motion?
● When an object changes position over time, it is said to be in motion
Speed
● The rate of the object’s motion is known as its speed
● Speed is based on how much distance is covered in a certain
amount of time
What’s your speed?
You travel 120 km in 2 hours. What was your
average speed?

A worm squiggles 10 cm in 5 minutes. What was its

average speed?
Velocity
● Velocity is the same as speed, but it also includes a direction.
● Two objects with the same speed can have different velocities if they travel in
different directions
“Change in Motion”
● Motion can change when speed or velocity changes. Therefore, motion
changes when an object
